Always the Same (Hebrews 1:12)

"I the LORD do not change..." (Malachi 3:6).

Our Lord Jesus is always the same.

This is good for us.  Jesus doesn't need to change because He is already perfect.  In fact we're told He "remains the same" (see Hebrews 1:2) and is the "same yesterday and today and forever" (see Hebrews 13:8).  Isn't this good news!

This, especially since people change all the time, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse.  The good kind of change is when we remember to become humble like a child and come to Jesus our unshakeable, unchangeable King of Kings and become part of His unshakeable Kingdom of God.

At times it may seem that He does change, that He forgets us but that isn't true.  When Jesus is silent it's like an invitation for us to seek Him first and more diligently (I read this from an online commentary).  Jesus is still there - never changing and always faithful.  He wants you to look for Him - like playing hide-and-seek.  Seek until you find our Jesus who never changes and is alwys the same.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus who is always the same.  We can trust and rely on Him even when good and bad changes happen in our lives.  Help me to change to be more like Him.

In Jesus' name I ask, Amen.

Superior to All (Hebrews 1:6)

It would be pretty startling if an angel suddenly appeared in your bedroom, don't you think?  Most Bible times characters were terrified when they met one.  Mary must have had nerves of steel and resolution when Gabriel showed up with the message of Jesus' birth through her.  It was noted by a preacher I recently listened to that the Bible doesn't record that she was afraid of the angel.

These days people generally think of angels as wonderfully, magnificient creatures that they'd love to encounter.  Granted, angels have helped many people, whether we realize it or not.  Sadly, some people worship angels instead of God.  Angels are beings created by God just like we human beings have been.

So look at what Hebrews 1:6 says,

"...When God brings His firstborn" (meaning Jesus) " into the world, He says, "Let all Gods angels worship Him".

So if angels are supposed to worship Jesus, that means Jesus is even greater than angels.  We call that being 'superior' or 'supreme'.  Jesus is the highest in rank, He is very great, in fact.  He is the greatest of all; our Supreme Leader.  Furthermore, He is the Head of all things, and King of the unshakeable Kingdom of God!

He is head over all He created.  He's head over all visible things like trees, clouds, birds, and people.  He's head over all invisible things like angels (unless God lets us see them); wind and gravity.

With gravity, you can't see it but you know its force especially when you step on the scale to weigh yourself.  He also keeps us from flying off the surface of the Earth and holds everything together by His might!

What is your response to all that?

Let us worship Him like the angels do because Jesus is Superior over all things.

Jesus, You are our God!  We bow before you because You are Superior to all.  Our Supreme Lord who is over all, and even angels worship You!  You are Head and King in the unshakeable kingdom and worthy of all our glory, honor and praise.  We love You because You first loved us.  Blessed be Your name, Lord Jesus!

Amen.

Unshakeable Message (Hebrews 1:3a)

We've been talking about the unshakeable Kingdom of God.  Did you know this kingdom has an unshakeable message.  Think on this...

"The Son," (meaning Jesus), "is the radience of God's glory and the exact representation of His being" (Hebrews 1:3a).

It is noted here that Jesus the Son is the "exact representation" of God's glory.  Jesus is the real God.  He is the original.  Jesus is God.

It may help to think about what you see when you look into a mirror or take a 'selfie'.  You do not see the real you.  It is only a reflection of yourself.  The image is not the original you.  Only everyone else can see the real you.  Ironic, right?

However, with Jesus, He is the exact representation and this is the unshakeable message God has revealed to us.  God wants us to know this.

Why would the adjective 'unshakeable' be used?  Well, God said, "I the LORD do not change" (see Malachi 3:6).  He's always the faithful one to us.  Jesus said, "I and my Father are one" (see John 10:30).  He also said, "I give them, " (His people), eternal life" (see John 10:28).  Conclusions can be deduced that God and Jesus are one and the same and will be, for ever.  He is unchangeable and unshakeable.  Hang tightly on to this message.

If Jesus is eternal, and He is, there is no expiry date.  Jesus is God, who lasts for ever.  We can then trust this unshakeable message because Jesus is the 'real' God.

Ponder upon these thoughts day and night.  How do they affect your thinking?  How will they change your life?

Father God, it's amazing to learn that Jesus is really You and that He is eteranl.  This is a message that is unshakeable, and helps me to trust You more.  I also feel greater love for Jesus.  You are really great!  Thank You in Jesus' name.

First Things First

What are you actively seeking for in life?  Do you have a point, purpose or goal?  What is the first, most important one on your bucket list?  Is it this...

"But seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness..." (Matthew 6:33 NIV)?

There are two things to seek.  First is God's kingdom and secondly, His righteousness.

We may tend to be glad to focus on the second part of this verse while glossing over the first imperative...

"...and all these things will be given unto you as well..." (Matthew 6:33).

Yes, its' nice to get rewards, privileges, our rights and encouragements but what about tending to first things first - responsibilities.  In this case, the responsibilities of a follower of Jesus Christ.  Of course to become a follower, one needs to begin the 'seeking'.  Then one must continue the seeking.

I don't think it's as difficult as looking for a needle in a haystack even though this is a spiritual kingdom that cannot be seen with our physical eyes, ironic as that may sound.

When we seek to live a righteous life - the life that pleases the Lord by being obedient to His will as found in the Scriptures - that is, seeking Him and His kingdom.  Good kingdom living is in part, being kind to one another, loving them, forgiving them and so on, and is all part of this righteousness.

Repenting of our wrongs, growing our faith and trust in the Lord; being fearless so we can have courage to tell others the good news of salvation and of Jesus and His unshakeable kingdom is the purpose and goal of this two-pronged, intertwined seeking.  We can also talk to the Lord in prayer.  This is how we can live righteously in His kingdom.  Seek it until you find it.

Heavenly Father, we your children want to seek you with our whole heart, soul, spirit and mind in order to live righteously in Your unshakeable, enduring kingdom.  You never fail but we often do.  Thank You therefore, for Your Holy Spirit who helps us with all this to please You.  May we each put first things first for Your kingdom.  Help all my  family, friends and neighbors to find You too.

In Jesus' name I ask, Amen.

Lord's Day Devotion - Purification Provided (Hebrews 1:1-2, 3b)

There is a very important and unshakeable message from God related to the unshakeable Kingdom of God.  It's this, that the Son, Jesus,

"...provided purification for sins..." (Hebrews 1:3b).

This is the message God wants us to know and do something about.  If there is purification for sins available, it must mean we need it and should avail ourselves thereof.

There are so many messages bombarding us daily from WhatsApp, Instagram and so on.  It can be so overwhelming.  Some are just chitchat but there are a few important ones in that 'haystack'.

Make note of it that there is the one that is the most important of all and that is the purpose for which Jesus even came into the world.  He wanted to show us that Jesus is God and that He loves us, so He died on the cross for our sins; thus the purification provided.  This, so we can have salvation that brings eternal life through Jesus.

When we accept Jesus as Savior, that means we got His message AND read it.  It's like getting a friend's WhatsApp message and then his being able to see the two blue ticks.  Your friend knows you've seen and hopefully read the message.

The BIG difference is that the message of Jesus is the most important message of all time.  Will you accept the purification for sins He has provided for you?

If you do, you will have taken hold of the unshakeable message and of the Kingdom of God that cannot be shaken.

Do not delay, accept Jesus, God's Son today.  Then you can pray as you partake of the broken bread and drink from the cup of wine this Lord's Day ...

Jesus, I'm so happy to have received Your message.  Thank You for all You've done for me, especially loving me and dying for my sins.  I accept You as my Savior and Lord.  Thank You.  Amen.

Visible Signs

"One day the Pharisees asked Jesus, "When will the Kingdom of God come?"  "Jesus replied, "The Kingdom of God can't be detected by visible signs.  You won't be able to say 'Here it is!' or 'It's over there!'  For the Kingdom of God is already among you" (Luke 17:20-21 NLT).

There is much confusion about the Kingdom of God and it could be because it can't be detected or seen by visible signs.  It's an invisible Kingdom!  However, it is here among us.

It is very important however to focus on this Kingdom of God.  We need to seek it above all else (see Matthew 6:33).  Along with seeking God's Kingdom is seeking His righteousness.

As believers in Jesus Christ, when we do this, our spiritual eyes will be opened to see Him and His Kingdom and be able to live aright within His territory.

Bringing others to Christ is imperitive so they too can become part of His unshakeable, enduring kingdom.  Jesus is coming soon.  Let's get His message of salvation out to as many people as possible.  Focus on it.

Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your name.  Your Kingdom has come to earth through Your Son Jesus and the children He brought into it through faith in Your gift of salvation.

Help us now to continue to seek Your Kingdom and righteousness and to tell out your message to one and all.  Help us to be the 'visible signs' detected in Your invisible spiritual Kingdom of God.

In King Jesus' name, Amen.

Change and Childlike

Do you want to get into God's enduring, unshakeable Kingdom?  Here's what Jesus said you'll need to do...

"I tell you the truth unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven" (see Matthew 18:2 NIV).

According to this verse, in order to get into the Kingdom of God, change is needed.  The needed change is to beome childlike.

Being humble, innocent and sincere and trusting are seen as being "childlike".  As adults we often have difficulty attaining these virtues.  Overcoming our pride, excuses and reasonings to bow to the King of kings and accept His salvation takes childlike behavior.  Therefore, putting all inhibitions aside, let us change our stance so we can remove the obstacles that would prevent us from coming humbly to Christ and becoming part of the Kingdom of God.

Humbly admit to being a sinner.  All that lying cheating, conniving and the host of unwholesome behavior needs to be repented of.  Repent and say sorry to God for it all; name them one-by-one.  Jesus will wash them all away with His blood, which was shed on the cross.  He gave His life for you.  Yet, up from the grave He arose, triumphant over sin, death and hell.  He will forgive you and bring you instantly into His Kingdom.  He invites you to come.

All of this because you chose to change and become like a child.

Praise the one who died for you and set you free!

Father God, we cannot thank-You enough for the salvation we can have through Your Son Jesus Christ who is the King in Your Kingdom.  Help those struggling with pride and other sins to change, become humbly childlike to the point of accepting Jesus as their Lord and Savior.  I ask in Jesus' name, Amen.

Enduring Spiritual Kingdom

What is a Kingdom?  It's a domain over which a king reigns.  Kings and kingdoms come and go.  A stronger king overthrows a weaker one and on and on it goes.

Nowadays there are not too many kingdoms left in the world.  The kingdom of Brunei Darussalem on the island of Borneo is such a one.  The Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah (for short) has been reigning for about 57 years.  Yet, he is growing older and his son will likely eventually take over.

By contrast, the Kingdom of God is an enduring kingdom as is its king, Jesus.  His kingdom will last for ever.

"The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign for ever and ever." (Revelation 11:15).

This word of God states the kingdom belongs to God and Christ.  What's more, it'll last "for ever and ever".

This kingdom of God cannot be seen with our physical eyes because it is a spiritual kingdom.  It may be difficult to understand this but know that Jesus is the kingdom and all followers of Jesus Christ are part of God's unshakeable kingdom.

God reigns supreme and sovereign and His kingdom is secure, safe and strong.  Nothing and no one can beat it down nor destroy it.  Satan and His minions may fiercely try by persecuting and harassing the people of God and even if a follower of Jesus succumbs to this pressure, the kingdom and its king will still stand firm and unshakeable.

A believer in Jesus is under the authority of King Jesus in this Kingdom of God.  Let us each bow to Him in reverence and awe while here on earth, doing His will in His kingdom and helping to extend His territory.  It will be action that endures for ever and ever and be of great enduring value.  Our God reigns!

Father God, in love you extended your kingdom to include those who have accepted Jesus as Savior.  You made Jesus to be Your King.  Thank You for the everlasting life You've given us who believe so that we could become His subjects in His enduring Kingdom ruled by the enduring King Jesus.

No matter who or what tries to destroy Your Kingdom, we are very grateful to know nothing can break it down.  May Your kingdom come and Your will be done.

In our enduring Jesus' name we give You our thanks.  Amen.

Lord's Day Devotion - Promise of Compassion

Promises, promises, promises...if only all could be kept!  There is Someone who does keep all He promises though and here's one of them...

"The LORD is good to all; He has compassion on all He has made" (Psalm 145:9 NIV).

The Lord's promise here is His compassion without discrimination.  His goodness goes out to all and sundry.  This is His goodness that can be felt and make a difference.

Our God is an awesome God; as the songwriter wrote.  When we get to the New Testament we still see that what psalmist David wrote about the Lord's compassion still held true.  Jesus had compassion on the crowds He saw.  The crowds had been with Him for three days and were hungry.  So He fed them in abundance (see Matthew 15:32).

When Jesus saw the widow woman, He had compassion on her and told her, "Don't cry".  Then He raised her only son from the dead right there in the middle of the funeral procession (see Luke 7:13-5)!  Imagine the roller-coaster of emotions that must have evoked.

Another time He saw crowds and felt compassion for them

"because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd" (Matthew 9:36).

Today, Jesus' compassion extends to us too.  He died on the cross to gain atonement for our souls, to buy our pardon with His own blood.  Now we have so great a salvation we should not ignore.

He didn't just pity and have sympathy.  No.  He had compassion, first for our salvation and then for our everyday living that reaches our hurts and wounds of life.  He says He'll give rest to all who are weary and heavy laden, to those who come to Him (see Matthew 11:28).

This is our right and privilege and we can come to Him in confidence and expectation because He is faithful to all His promises in His everlastiing, unshakeable kingdom (see Psalm 145:13-14).  This is compassion in action - His coming to seek and to save that which was lost (see Luke 19:10).

He sought and found us.

In heartfelt gratitude, let each of us ponder this Lord's Day on Jesus' promise of compassion and the action He undertook on our behalf to redeem us.  Think upon it as you partake of the broken bread and drink from the cup of wine, passing them to each other.  Then give Him your thanks.

Abba Father, thank You for Your faithfulness, compassion and mercy. Without them we would be truly lost.  In this life now in Your family we continue to need them and You and to rely upon Your promises.  Thank You for sending Jesus' who showed this compassion in practical, astounding ways.  Work still among us, Father.  In Jesus' precious name we give You our thanks and praise.  Amen.

Permanent and Unshakeable (Hebrews 12:28)

"Therefore ... we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken" (Hebrews 12:28).

We really do have an unshakeable kingdom as God is the author and Jesus is our King.  They are for ever and ever.

Nothing is permanent in this world but the Heavenly kingdom, is eternal.  When you glean through the book of Hebrews you'll see such words as "remains the same" (referring to God's Throne); "for ever and ever" (Hebrews 1:8); "Jesus our High Priest for ever and ever" (Hebrews 6:20; 7:17);  a "permanent priesthood...always lives" (Hebrews 7:24); "eternal redemption"  (Hebrews 9:12); "promised an eternal inheritance" (Hebrews 9:13); "offered for all time ... made perfect forever" (Hebrews 10:12-14); "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8); "enduring city" (Hebrews 13:14); and "eternal covenant" (Hebrews 13:20).  It's all very reassuring, and secure sounding, don't you think?

We can trust these promises of God who is ever faithful.  Give Him Your praise and adoration and trust.

Father God, we humbly bow at Your feet in adoration and worship.  You are ever the same and have given us an enduring kingdom to be with You - a Kingdom that can never be shaken.  Grow our trust in You, Your word and Your kingdom.  May Your Kingdom come.  Help us as individuals and as Your children, to not be shaken as we cling on to You throughout life's earthly journey, which is temporary.  We look for Your city and the time when we can be with you in incorruptibility - forever.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Rights, Rewards and Blessings

Sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ has its rights, rewards and blessings.  Here's some that Paul wrote about...

"Don't we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do other apostles and the Lord's brothers and Cephas?...the plowman plows and the thresher threshes, they ought to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest...If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest among you?  If others have this right of support from you, shouldn't we have it all the more?  But we did not use this right.  On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ...In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel...But I have not used any of these rights.  And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me, for I would rather die than allow anyone to deprive me of this boast...What then is my reward?  Just this:  that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make full use of my rights as a preacher of the gospel....I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings" (1 Corinthians 9:5, 9-12, 14, 18, 23 NIV YouVersion).

Those who preach the gospel have the right to bring along a believing wife and to be supported financially, among other types of support.  In preaching the gospel there are also rewards and blessings in which to share.

When we look back in Old Testament times and see that the children of Israel were to give tithes of their produce such as grains, wine, olive oil, and cattle to the Levites, as return for the work they did while serving in the tent of meeting (see Numbers 18:21-32), we will understand more readily the principle Paul wrote about to the Corinthians.  That is, those who preached the gospel of Jesus Christ were entitled to a "material harvest".  It was one of their rights.

The children of Israel were to give their "best parts" of the fruit of their labors.  This is an excellent guideline for those of us who give our 'tithe' for the support of preachers and teachers of God's Word today.  They have a right to it.

It behooves each believer in Christ to look out for our "Levites" in urban and rural settings.  Often the rural ones struggle the most since many of those congregations experience 'hand-to-mouth' existence as well.  It's good to look into this and see who legitimately needs our support and in what capacity, whether it be monetary or material or otherwise.

The point is, where are our hearts and are we giving willingly and of our best to those "treading out the grain" (see vs 9).  This is our right to cater to their rights.

Besides this, it is good for the preacher-teacher to have his wife along.  You can imagine this out on a variety of levels.  Therefore, we should not criticise him for doing so.  Our support should then be commensurate with "two-mouths" to feed.  Taking this to logical conclusions, if both man and wife are traveling, there will likely be children in tow.  Commensurate rights should correspond accordingly.

For example, I know of a brother who became a full-time itinerate preacher-teacher.  He had six children.  When he traveled with his family, other families actually took them into their home giving them beds to sleep on (or the floor with sleeping bags), food to eat and fellowship.  This was two-way blessing and the hospitality of a family with a big expandable, willing and cheerful heart.

This is part of the right that also feels like a blessing to the recipient.  Having said that, the blessing Paul referred to as sharing in, would likely have been those who had accepted Christ as Savior, and then to see them walking in faith and in committed Christian living.  This may even have extended into these "treasures for heaven" (see Matthew 6:19-21) passing the teaching and preaching baton on, as well.

Due to this, Paul was even willing to forego his right to the Corinthians' support as he offered his preaching of the gospel "free of charge" (see vs 18).

Jehovah Jireh, God our Provider, thank You for all You give us and the care and support that preachers and teachers of Your Word receive.

Open our hearts, minds, and eyes to see and discern what such a preacher or teacher needs.  Help us to then willingly and cheerfully give our best to You our Master as we give and support the harvesters in Your field.  It is essential and crucial for these "Levites".  May they receive their rights and much blessing as they serve You.

In Jesus' name we give.

The Sheep Dogs

"Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever" (Psalm 23:6 NIV).

No fear, God's goodness and love is with us during our lifespan and then for all eternity with Him in His house.

The comfort and assurance David had springs out to us too as we read and ponder upon his penned words.  Sometimes our lives may seem to be 'the pits' instead of the cherries.  But no, God gives us His word as otherwise.

We can sing to Him with a song of praise with a grateful heart.  As my Dad liked to describe it:   'Goodness' and 'Mercy' (or 'Love') are two sheep dogs the shepherd (see vs 1) employs throughout our lifetime even in the midst of dark valleys and in the presence of enemies.

HIS presence is with us and so Goodness and Mercy dog our heels too, all through our days and will never let us out of 'their' sight.  Upon our passing from this earth and the release our spirits and souls have from our earthy bodies, we will dwell in His house - forever.  There is no gap or time lapse - it'll be instantaneous, so we need fear no evil.

Lord Jesus, You are our Good Shepherd and we give You thanks for Your presence which is with us all our days and into our eternity with You at the end of our earthly toils and troubles and joys.  What confidence and comfort You give us with these words!

What's more!  Your 'sheep dogs', Goodness and Mercy, follow us and keep us in the right pasture and following after You as Your goodness, love and mercy are poured out in showers of blessing and hope upon us.

Thank-You, Good Shepherd.

In Your name Lord Jesus, we give Your our praise and thanksgiving.

Book Review - Pray For Her - By Holly S. Roberts - Publication Date: 12 December 2023

Although this book is a work of fiction, I believe the unfolding story reflects true-to-life events.  It is good to have awareness of some of the evils of mens' hearts.  This one reveals polygamy and a whole lot of other 'bad' associated therewith, perpetuated from nefarious religious beliefs' perspectives.  The author doesn't mince words.  It is great that this also reflects good, as in Detective Eve Bennet and her team.  This is Book 3 in  the series.  I feel that it is ok as a stand alone book but it would have been great to have read the previous two for context.

Lord's Day Devotion - God's Time Out

This Lord's Day, let us make way in our hearts and lives for the Lord.  After all, He made way for us.  See here...

"A voice of one calling:  "in the wilderness prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God" (Isaiah 40:3 NIV).

Prepare the way for the LORD, He is coming to the wilderness, and desert.  There's a voice calling to listeners with those intructions.

"Prepare the way..."  There are many things we prepare for, such as:  weddings, which take months of preparation; or even just to go to work, school or church.  You get ready and then you go.

In the Isaiah verse, it feels like there are things that need to be moved out of the way, smoothened out and untangled.  This, to make way for the new.  It could literally be like if a king or other dignitary is coming to town.  Roads get repaved, highways decked with flags of visiting countries and so forth.

Spiritually, we may need a time out to assess our lives.  What is praiseworthy and God pleasing can be kept, renewed and refreshed.  What is not, can be relinquished and cleared out of our lives.  In this way we 'prepare the way for the LORD' to come in and for us to draw near to Him, minus the distractions or influences,  even in the wildernesses and deserts our lives may be enduring.

Jesus was sent to Earth by God His Father for a big 'time out'.  John the Baptizer called out in the wilderness for the people of his time to prepare the way for Jesus' coming.  They had to repent and be baptized.  The were set apart and made ready for Jesus to come (see John 1:19-27, especially verse 23 NIV).

The 'time out' Jesus had was His mission to be punished for our sins.  He was redeeming us, and making atonement for our souls.  He prepared all those who believe, for His second coming.

Many of those John the Baptizer had 'prepared' for Jesus' first coming, then received Him, and became children of God (see John 1:12) after His resurrection and ascension.

As we prepare our hearts and minds to remember the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ's death and resurrection, let us keep in mind all His 'time out' accomplished for us.

Take of the broken bread and drink from the cup of wine with hearts attuned to Him.  Let us then go out rejoicing, continually keeping our hearts prepared.  Make regular 'time outs' for God.  Prepare for Him to come and commune with you in the best and worst of days.  Go to Him in prayer.

Lord Jesus, our hearts bow humbly before You, thanking You for the time out You took to prepare the way for us to get back into relationship with God our Heavenly Father.

Help us through Your Holy Spirit to always take time outs to prepare for time out with You.  May it be our 'norm' even in times of great trouble and turmoil in our lives where it feel like our foundations are shaking and crumbling.  Draw us ever closer to You despite the wilderness and desert.  Make a smooth highway to You.

In Your name Lord Jesus, we give You our thanks and prepared hearts.

Amen.

Separation From One's Spouse

Among Christians, confusion often abounds regarding divorce and separation.  When circumstances become unfavorable and in the angst of the situation, guilt may take over because of all the wobbly, uncertain teaching.  Regarding separtation, look at these verses...

"To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord):  A wife must not separate from her husband.  But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband.  And a husband must not divorce his wife" ( 1 Corinthians 7:10-11 -[emphasis mine]).

At first glance it appears separation from ones spouse is NOT an option.  However, there is conditional allowance.  The wife, if she separates, must remain unmarried.  The husband must not divorce his wife.

True enough, it is not ideal to be separated from one's spouse.  God is not in favor of it.  However, because of the conditional allowance, it can be considered as an option.

I'm thinking - what are the scenarios in which a wife would wish to separate from her husband?

How about severe emotinal abuse, manipulation and lies so much so that the spirit of the wife is so damaged and altered?  These are wounds and bruises which are not visible to the eye but are every bit as damaging as physical abuse.

Whether it is from an alcoholic husband, a womanizer, a simply ill-tempered man, you name it, the wife may feel safety in separation for herself and any children there may be.  No doubt the reverse could be true where the husband needed to seek separation but likely it is mostly the wife and children who are the ones in harm's way.

For the Christian wife to consider and activate separation she should keep the conditions in mind.  This is a serious chain of events and other believers would do well to authentically and compassionately care for and support such a decision and beware the manipulating spouse.  Pray with her for the time of reconciliation to take place; if indeed it could ever be possible.  LISTEN to her heart cry.

Divorce is not supposed to be in the equation for this type of situation.  We do know from the other Scriptures that God hates divorce (see Malachi 2:16) but He did allow it due to the hardness of mens' hearts (see Mark 10:1-5 NIV).

Let other brothers and sisters-in-Christ view each situation with love, care and compassion.  You may not know or understand to full extent of what a wife endures, often for years and years on end.

Father God, we are fully aware that You hate divorce and that what you join together, man should not put asunder.  Yet because of the hardness of mans' hearts to get themselves right with You, harmful situations happen.  Such situations, which cause a wife to separate from her husband.

Protect these women and give them the courage they need to step aside for a time of separation.  Help them, especially if there are children who also need Your protection.  Help these wives through it all and to remain celebate despite need for comfort and consolation.  May these wives turn to You for direction and rest from their anxiety, pain and consternation of the detrimental situation.  Alleviate any feelings of guilt they may have in seeking safety away from their spouse.

May there be compassionate friends and family to reach out in love and care.  Bring about reconciliation and a mended heart when the time is right and the believer husband has repented and can be truly trusted to behave correctly, as Christ with the Church.

This I ask in Jesus' name.

The Bought Bride Behavior

In many cultures brides are bought.  Sometimes the payment is with the buffalo 'currency,' or with jewelry, and/or cash, among other things.  God bought a bride for His Son Jesus.  Look at the following verses...

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore honor God with your bodies" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV).

All believers in Jesus Christ have been bought with the price of His life and blood.  He then made us each a temple of His Holy Spirit.  This 'seal' or sign that we belong to Him would be like our engagement ring.  Because of this we must honor Him with our bodies.

Reading these two verses in context of the previous verses shows us that there had been sexual sins, which is sin against ones own body.  These things should not be allowed by us for the BIG reason that our bodies are now NOT our own but belong to the Holy Spirit.

Therefore, we do not have a right to be mastered by sexual sins or any other type of sin or influence.  Jesus is our Lord and Master and we need to honor God by what we do and allow ourselves to be involved in.

If you want to see this from ancient times and "old fashioned" cultural practices, the buying of a bride then means she belongs not just to the groom but also his family who have dibs on her.  She will become part of this new family and they can treat her however they wish, whether for good or bad.  She may even have to have severed ties with her own family.

When we relate this to the Christian life, we indeed need to sever ties with all that old life without Christ.  We, the bride of Christ, now belong to God's family and need to behave in Christlike manner with good Christian living as seen in the Bible; especially in the New Testament.

He is not harsh.  He is caring, loving and a good, good Father.  Jesus our groom, is just like that too.  When we keep this in mind along with His having bought us at such a costly cost, then out of love and gratitude, let us allow the Holy Spirit to help us to live a life that honors God with our bodies.

Father in Heaven, You are our good, good Father.  You love us and care about us and when You brought us into Your family through the costly price of Jesus' death and resurrection, as the Bride of Christ, we give You our thanks.  We realize, in theory, we now belong to You.  Help us through Holy Spirit's power and indwelling to remember this and so honor you in all we do, especially with our bodies.

In Jesus' name we thank You.

Book Review - The Tuscan Orphan - By Siobhan Daiko - Publication Date: 14 November 2023

It's always interesting to learn about historical events in the gift-wrapping of fiction.  Although some facts may be altered there is still the basic enlightening from which to launch ones own research.  I believe this is the case with this book.

Seeing and experiencing WWII through Carrie, an American army nurse's eyes, gave me some of the 'feel' of the terror and carnage and heartaches that the actual nurses and doctors would have experienced as it happened.  Kudos to them and the locals in Italy.  Namely, Vito and Ezio representing resistance fighters.  Kudos to dear young Mimi too.

I found the title of the book misleading as I felt the story was more about Carrie the nurse, rather than Mimi the orphan.  I also caution potential readers who may not wish to read about intimate bedroom scenes.

Another Fiona Figg special.  She's a woman of many disguises who sleuthes her way through yet another mystery and murder.  She'll certainly lead you on a merry chase in pursuit of the culprits.  Oh and if only she can decide which suitor suits her!  Lots of fun especially for those who like some light and quick reading, and a laugh here and there, I'd say.  I enjoyed it.

Book Review - The Year of Goodbyes and Hellos - By Kelly Irvin - Publication Date: 5 December 2023

This work of fiction is seen from Kristen, Sherri and Daniel's perspectives.  I couldn't seem to get into much of the story at first shake; however, I think anyone and their family and friends going through the cancer treatment journey together would most likely have an affinity with Sherri's day-to-day battle with her health.  The author was candid and readers may well have great tugs at their heartstrings and need to keep a box of tissue handy.

A secondary thread reflecting the struggling 'battle' of a marital relationship was woven throughout.  Accordingly, married couples may well relate.

A third thread, which I appreciated was the faith-based one of the God - human being relationship and the grappling with Him in prayer.  Did He hear?  Did He care?

Discussion questions follow the narrrative's end for those who wish to take a more serious ponder on issues arising from what I feel are the three main threads.

My Right

Have you ever heard anyone say, "It's my life, I can do whatever I want"?  The apostle Paul remarked on similar phrasing.  He wrote to the Corinthians,

"I have the right to do anything," - but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything" - but I will not be mastered by anything" (1 Corinthians 6:12).

There is licence to do anything but it won't all be beneficial.  There is warning too to not be overcome and domineered by what we feel we have a right to be doing.

There had been a lot of sexual immorality, greed, drunkeness, slandering and more of such behavior among the Corinthian believers prior to their conversion (see 1 Corinthians 6:9-11).  They had been doing whatever they had wanted and felt they'd had a 'right' to be engaged therein.  However, after they had been sanctified and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Holy Spirit, they mostly all  had stopped being mastered by those things of the old nature.

Yet still, they were being mastered by disputes and lawsuits instead of letting themselves be cheated and wronged.  Whoa!  Not easy here.  Paul went through a lot of this against him so he had a 'right' to strongly admonish them (ahem, as well as his being an apostle).  He had endured.

The point I target here is to not be mastered by the things of the flesh even if they may seem harmless and to be your 'right' to do them.

A Christian Chinese couple may feel they have a right to wear the Qun Gua* at their wedding, but the dragon and phoenix embroidered on the resplendant red gowns may cause another believer to stumble in their faith.

If the believer had come out of a background of worshipping  such creatures and then sees other believers wearing such, it may be "harmless" to the couple but detrimental to the 'weak' believer.  He or she may feel, "Oh, it must be ok to still revere those creatures."

Or, someone may feel a sip or two of alcoholic beverage is ok.  However, if the amount and the frequency increases to the point of becoming an alcoholic, that believer has been mastered by having exerted their 'right' to have a drink.

Having a drink had been 'beneficial' for Timothy (see 1 Timothy 5:23).  In fact, Paul suggested it, medicinally, for Timothy.  We do not read of Timothy becoming mastered by his 'medicine' though.

Let us be aware and cautious of the 'rights' we allow ourselves.  Is it only for our own sakes and interest, or are we following the Lord's interests?  Will we further His Kingdom by what we allow in our lives because it is our 'right'?

For the Corinthians, pursuing  their 'rights' got them into a mess (see 1 Corinthians 6).  If we allow ourselves to be mastered by our own interests, that has become idolatrous and definitely not beneficial to ourselves.

Our God and Father, Judge of all, we human beings are often so selfish and wayward.  We want our 'rights' and often insist on having them.  We do not want to be slighted or used or cheated.  No one does.  However, You sanctified and justified us through Your Son Jesus, who had so many of His rights violated, and Holy Spirit, so that we are enabled to follow YOUR interests, relinquishing our own.  Thank You for Holy Spirit who helps us to give  up our 'rights' to You and to not be mastered by them.  May we make Jesus our only master.  This is our right as Your child.

Thank You in Jesus' name.

Book Review - The Ball of Red String - By Marlene Halpin, O.P. - Publication Date: 5 December 2023

This story gets a huge thumbs up from me.  It's so simple yet so to the point for helping any child to understand Jesus loves them and wants a relationship with them, that it's easy to talk with Jesus.  I love the red ball of string idea of how a child can follow where it leads as it unravels and rolls along, leading - so to speak - to find Jesus and commune with Him.

At the end of the book, there are great suggestions on how Sunday School teachers, carers of children and I suppose, even parents, can use the story to greater effect in teaching children to talk with and listen for Jesus' answers, even if it is all silent communication.  Excellent, excellent book!

Illustrations in muted colors add extra garnish to the story.

A definite 5-Star rating from me!

Strengthened, Made Level and Healed

"Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.  Make level paths for your feet, so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed" ( Hebrews 12:12 & 13 NIV).

When we strengthen ourselves with God and obedience to His Word and make level paths I believe we will find healing, spiritually and even often physically.

When we read the verses preceding our focus verses (see Hebrews 12:1-11), we'll find the prescription for the strengthening, leveling and healing as found in verses 12 and 13.

"Running with perseverence," "enduring hardship as discipline,"  and "submitting to our Heavenly Father our spirits, so we will live" we will find the further strengthening, leveling and healing that comes from the whole process.

This is for all who are children of God.  Allow yourself to be trained and disciplined by God our Father.

Recently, a friend fell and broke her leg.  She had to have surgery to help her heal.  That was the doctor's part.  Her part now, she told us, is to do the physical therapy needed to strengthen her leg and keep it nimble.

While visiting her, a group of us discovered that several among us have had leg or other limb injuries.  They were enjoying themselves telling their stories.  Some were left with slight limps or restricted movements but they do each manage a more or less normal range of motion and body capacity to function, almost like before.

Each had had to do their part though.  Similarly, God gives His children discipline but we have to do our part and submit to the training.  After all, He does this for our good.

Yes, we may end up with scars and/or feeble knees, but we can persevere towards the goal of healing.  This is exactly what our friend purposes.  She has set her goal that by Christmastime, she'll be able to come to church and celebrate the birth of Jesus together with the rest of her brothers and sisters-in-Christ.

When we apply this to our spiritual daily Christian living, let us be so focused and fix our eyes on Jesus, and submit to Him and His discipline.  It is good for us and will yield a harvest of righteousness and peace when we allow the training to work in our lives.

May all our feeble arms and weak knees (even as we age) to be strengthened.  May we be making our paths level, so our spiritual lameness and disabilities will be healed through Christ.

Father God, thank You for the discipline You put us through.  Of course, it is painful and we'd rather not have to go through it at all.  Nevertheless, thank You for the training as You create within us the holiness You desire.  You do want us to be healed.

In our feeblenesses and weaknesses, with patience may we still persevere, endure, submit, and strengthen ourselves, taking on the responsibility that is our part to do.

Thank You for the healing that then comes from You, both spiritually and physically.

In Jesus' name we give You our heartfelt praise and thanksgiving.

Following Their Faith

Do the leaders in your church put themselves up on a pedestal?  Indeed, do you help put them up there?  The apostle Paul could not stand this sort of stance.  He wrote to the Corinthians,

"...and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.  So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God" (1 Corinthians 3:23; 4:1).

We are all "of Christ".  Leaders are servants of Christ.  These servants are entrusted with God's secret things.

Our being "in Christ," sounds like equal footing to me.  "The ground is level at the cross," I remember hearing someone say.  Therefore, none of us belong on a pedestal in the temple of God.

Paul referred to himself as a "servant of Christ".  Servants do hold a position regarded as 'lowly' and Paul purposely chooses to place himself in that humble role.

Even though 'lowly,' the servant of Christ has a very important task.  That is, he (or she) is "entrusted with the secret things of God".

Preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ is actually each believer's commission.  So is teaching those who come by faith to Jesus Christ for salvation.  These are the secret things of God and we are actually not to keep them secret.

But I digress.  If and when we put any one believer up on a pedestal we begin to create, among other things, divisions among the people of God.  This seems to be what happened in Corinth.

Granted, those who teach and preach, such as the elders, who live among us and govern faithfully as godly servants, and who are in authority within the local church are to be considered,

"worthy of double honor" (see 1 Timothy 5:17-18).

Additionally, those who have spoken the word of God to us, we are to follow their faith (see Hebrews 13:7).  The emphasis is on the faith.

The double honor part appears to be in connection with remuneration; that is, financial support.  Following another's faith on the second account is not putting another on a pedestal nor creating divisions.  It is following the faith.  We have to recall that leaders do fail and fall.  Follow their faith, not their personage.

Therefore, both leaders as well as congregants need to be freely aware of both sides of this coin.  Leaders, don't accept adoration and congregants don't give it.  In so doing, make your purpose be to preach and teach the gospel and way of Christian living, building faith in and relationship with Jesus Christ.  Remember, we are each a servant of God; that we are "of Christ, and Christ is of God."  Give glory to God.

Father in Heaven, we love You.  You are the only one we should revere because You are the one and only to be placed on a pedestal in our hearts and minds.  We give You our praise and thanksgiving.

We are thankful for those of Your servants who preach and teach us from Your Word and help build us up in our most holy faith in You through Jesus.

We are sorry and repent of the times we allowed others to be on a pedestal among us but thankful for those who have strong faith in You so we can learn from them and follow their faith.  Help us to be faithful in carrying the trust You have entrusted us all with.

This I ask in Jesus' name.
