Book Review - The Sisters of Sea View - By Julie Klassen - Publication Date: 6 December 2022

I really enjoyed reading this story.  It has an aura of  Jane Austin books, which are among my favorites.  There were the sisters; The Eltons; the nips of romance; good works; and talk of some who had been scarred in life stemming from a variety of reasons both physical and emotional, and how they learned to cope.  It's the type of book where the author weaves in "therapy" and self-help parts unobtrusively.  I feel it really beefs up the reading experience in beneficial manner lending that unexpected bonus edge.  Another part I appreciated was the faith based aspect where some of the characters trusted in God and there were actual Bible references read and referred to.  All in all, a lovely and satisfying read.

Canvas of Spring

They wanted to know, that is, for me to explain my most favorite piece of art.  The choice is actually difficult because I have several "favorites" but I'll hone in on one that was a gift from a child who had some neurodiverse difficulties.

This child certainly knew where some of her abilities counted, in her paintings.  Her artwork was truely a piece of herself then, in the giving, which touched my heart like almost nothing else.

It was a Canvas of Spring - at least that's what I'll call it.  The colors chosen were among my favorites, just a shade or two brighter than pastels but not by much.  The result - a flower bower kaleidoschope of glory on a backdrop of azure sky.  The sun shone warmly too, smiling its benevolence upon the scene.  One can almost see and feel the gentle breezes drift lazily along, energizing the flowers to nod thanks to the passing waker, allowing them to give obeyance to their Creator.

This whole rectangle of art is like a loving, comforting embrace, wrapping around me each time I view it.  It makes me smile.  It adorns my bedroom wall like a beacon of gratitude, acceptance and encouragement, that yes, I too, matter.  I too count, and so do my abilities!

So do you and yours!

Book Review - Into the Lyon of Fire - By Abigail Bridges - Publication Date: 30 November 2022

I feel most readers won't want to skip a single sentence of this short but sweet novella of historical fiction.  The narrative has been set during the early 1800's in London when Napoleon was stirring up strife in Russia.  Matthew Rydell, soldier par excellence-cum-Duke becomes the most eligible and handsome bachelor but reluctant marriage candidate.  His fine aristocratic mother insists on it, so he goes about it in his own way with the help of his brother Mark.   This creates some humor and let's not forget to mention the complications which arise from it.  I did appreciate Matthew's philosophy on how to treat a woman.

I'm chuckling about it as I type and want to say I really liked this story and was sorry when it ended.  There is one caution, however, as some readers may take exception to the more intimate bedroom activity details.  All things considered, it was a pleasing read.

Forest Hideout 'Soul-ace'

Once upon a time in my childhood days I had a favorite hideout in the evergreen forest.  There was a gigantic boulder as a backdrop, which perhaps had been deposited there during the iceage.  It was hard to tell.  It was, during my peek active visiting times, adorned with lichen as if it had pigmentation problems.  I didn't really care.  It was beautiful to me, rock solid and had my back when I sought its stalwart comfort.

Childhood morphed into teen years, then early adulthood and rarely did I seek solace but one day, feeling particularly depressed, I bushwhacked through the overgrown path, almost missing my boulder haunt.  It was so good to be back, like meeting up with an old comfortable friend.

The birds, squirrels, and deer, having heard me coming, gathered and greeted me, as if I'd been a celebrity making a comeback after many years out of the limelight.  They twittered and tweeted, scolded and looked at me with doe-eyes, as if to reprimand me for my extended absence and neglect.

Nevertheless, after carving out the overgrowth and arranging "my stage" with the machete cuttings, the green foliage surroundings embraced my soul once again.  The forest animals gathered round, like an audience, expectantly.

It was as if it was their job to jot down my outpourings.  The squirrels poised with acorn 'notepaper', paused their chatter; the birds, some lit on my shoulders and hands, pecking my birdseed offerings, others happily hopped at the scattered seeds on the organic, emerald flooring.  The deer munched on newly discarded leaves from my pruning and trimming.

Soothing, is what is was.  A slight breeze drifted by, just like the old days, bringing sweet, pine-of-the-forest scents and of musky earth.  I sighed, "Why hadn't I come more often?"  Slowly, stress squeezed and oozed out, the squirrels began scribbling, the birds momentarily halted their eating and cocked their wee heads at me, while the deer chewed more foliage and shook their heads up and down in agreement.

"Yes, let it all out," they seemed to say.

When I was done, peace reigned.  Exhausted and drained, I slumped over and fell into dreamless sleep on the makeshift bed of grass and leaves.

No wonder this had been my favorite place.

Book Review - Death At the Falls - By Rosemary Simpson - Publication Date: 29 November 2022`

This will give you a merry chase after bewildering leads as you accompany Prudence and Geoffry, and company on the trail and discovery of evidence of Rowan's legitimacy and the tangled maze of murder and other curious happenings.  Even the famous Pinkertons and ex-Pinks get in on the excitement throughout this mid-1800's historical tale.  Frustrations  and satisfactions abound, so beware you don't barrel over either side of the Niagara Falls to your death!

In my books, I'd say that this author has really done herself proud.  She has created a great, clean, thrilling detective story that'll set your heart racing and keep your mind guessing.  I believe just about any adult will love this adventure.

Lord's Day Devotion - Layers of Love

Winter forces folks to don layers and layers of clothing in order to keep warm.  We shiver into the first few and then relax as the next layers begin to warm us.  Then with cup of tea, coffee, hot chocolate or the like, we sip our way to more warmth.  If we're extra blessed, we gather round a fireside or wood stove.

Cozy settings.

The putting on of layered clothing reminds me of Paul's injunction to the Colossians to clothe themselves with spiritual layers, which bespeak similarly to the fruit of the Spirit.

Layers such as,

"compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience" ( Colossians 3:12).

How's that for starters?  When warming ourselves with these we can then become "warmers" for others like those warming cups of hot liquid or even the woodstove.  These are elements of genuine Christian living.

Paul persists in the layering...these are tough ones for many of us but putting on these further layers will help us to be more like Christ...

"Bear with each other...forgive one another...Forgive as the Lord forgave you..." (Colossians 3:13).

No doubt many have experienced such "layering" as not being able to zap into these "clothes" at a moment's notice.  They take time and determination on our part, along with our Helper, the Holy Spirit - a process.

This is likely why Paul mentions 'humility' before he mentioned 'forgiving' because it takes a knocking down of our pride to be able to do so.  Thankfully, we have the example of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ - ever our Prime Example.

Love will bind these virtues together Paul said, and that in "perfect unity" (Colossians #:14).

Can you feel yourself "wrapped up" against the elements yet?  Is your heart warming?  Draped in God's love we can then experience "the peace of Christ" and allow this peace to "rule in our hearts".  In the end, we can be thankful; toasty warm, as if beside a winter fireside.

This is what God has done for each and every one of His children through Jesus Christ.  Jesus was full of compassion, kindness, humility, and so on.  His love led Him to the cross for us; led Him to forgive us and make peace with God for us.  Now we can sing those psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with hearts clothed and warmed by gratitude for all He has accomplished for us, who in faith have accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord of our lives.  Now we can live our lives in the name of Jesus and give Him thanks.

Reach out then, take and partake of the broken bread and drink from that cup of wine this Lord's Day.  Do this in remembrance of Jesus' death and resurrection and of our salvation through Him and all this entails.  Then continue to don those layers allowing,

"the message of Christ [to] dwell among you richly..." (Colossians 3:16).

May His love, infused within us, be that warmest cloak, a living aura in this message, characterizing and identifying us as "God's chosen people".  May we each ever be warmed and clothed by God's love.

Book Review - What We Found In Hallelujah - By Vanessa Miller - Publication Date: 29 November 2022

This is a wonderful story of God's redeeming love and power working in people even if and when they've lost their faith and trust in Him.  I like it that author Vanessa Miller included many Scriptures and thoughtful "mini speeches" in the minds and mouths of her characters, especially the loveable Pastor O'Dell.  There is much about lying, well-kept secrets, prejudice, forgiveness, hurricanes and beach houses, prayer and so much more that gives this book a good wholesome spine (pun intended).  It was easy to like Nic and I enjoyed getting to know Ruby, Hope and Faith as they struggled about Trinity.  In the end, the threads of the story tie nicely together and despite the deep sadnesses their faith brings measures of healing and happiness.  Teenagers as well as adults will appreciate this Hallelujah story.

When Obedience is Complete

The Apostle Paul's authority was divinely given and so he could command as the Holy Spirit enlightened him.  However, it seems like some of the Corinthians thought he "talked big" in letters but in person he was,

"unimpressive and his speaking amounted to nothing" (2 Corinthians 10:10 NIV).

Yet Paul dared to confront this thinking as he was fully confident he had the

"authority of the Lord" (v 8),

not to lord it over them but for the purpose of building these Corinthian believers up and not to tear them down.

That seems somewhat tongue-in-cheek, as that's exactly what some of them had been doing - tearing him down.  I suppose they didn't want to be submissive to his authority.  They had misjudged, as it was actually the Lord's authority they were rejecting.

Second Corinthians 10:6 seems rather contradictory but seeing this verse in this light is more understandable.  Read the verse...

"And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete."

When I first read this verse, I went, "Huh!?  If they are already obedient how could there be disobedience left among them?!"  It didn't make sense to me because at first, it seems like Paul is chomping at the bit and somewhat exasperated with this assembly of believers, yet he had patience to wait until any remnant of disobedience had succumbed; been repented of and instead had become obedient.  He was prepared to wait it out despite the urgency of his tone.

When they did submit, it would have been to God's authority and not his, per se. Paul was

"ready to punish every act of disobedience" (v 6).

He had already instructed as much towards the incestuous man of 1 Corinthians 5:1.  He said that they were all together and

"the power of our Lord Jesus is present" (1 Corinthians 5:4 NIV)

that they should take the action of

"handing this man over to Satan" (1 Corinthians 5:5).

This was not to drag and rake him over the coals and humiliate him but to discipline and punish him in view of restoration.  Oh how I like this view!

"To destruct the flesh but save his spirit" (1 Corinthians 5:5).

Repentance and restoration - two BIG 'R's of reconciliation in realtionship with God the Father and fellow believers.  Praise-worthy and noteworthy action that all gatherings of believers need to take heed to and implement.

The verse-by-verse commentary gave this explanation in regards to the type of disobedience meant,

"...those opposed to Paul's apostolic ministry that was bestowed upon him in the Holy Spirit, especially in his writings."

In regard to the "when your obedience is fulfilled" statement, they said,

"...when the Corinthian church would submit itself to the authority of the apostle, it would be obedience to God."

Furthermore,

"...when the church corporately and in obedient faith [obeyed], Paul's apostolic sanctions would not have to be applied".

God our Heavenly Father does discipline us as needed and as He sees fit.  If he does not, then perhaps we are not His legitimate child (Hebrews 12:8).  If we are, then let's all humbly, submissively obey Him in our personal life and among the believers in Jesus Christ - corporately.

True, leadership could be wrong at times but take it to the Lord in prayer and follow His guidance through His Word and the Holy Spirit.  There are verses in God's Word to direct our behavior in confronting those in authority over us in any circumstance we may encounter.  No one is above God's discipline in His family (Matthew 1:15-18; 1 Timothy 5:19).

Brothers and sisters-in-Christ, let us all encourage one another, and build each other up in our most holy faith, being completely obedient to the authority God has bestowed upon our spiritual leaders within the church, who are looking out for the interests of others and especially living by faith and circumspectly before God.  Work together as a church to bring all glory and honor to our loving, caring Heavenly Father, God.  May the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be with us all.

Book Review - Never Name the Dead - By D.M. Rowell - Publication Date: 8 November 2022

It has been a priviledge to read of the Kiowas - a North Amercian First People tribal group who found their home in Oklahoma.  I found it of great interest to learn of some of the Kiowas' customs, culture and of their oral tradition of storytelling as they are interwined in this work of fiction.  We are introduced to Mud's grandfather who is a storyteller par excellent and concerned with protecting his culture and of instilling it into the next generations.  He trained Mud since she was a pesky young shadow dogging his heels.   Don't mess with her now though.

Many of the every day Kiowas' living utensils, regalia, paintings, and so on were disappearing and someone or more were enriching themselves at the cost of many of the Kiowas' families and heritage being whisked away, to be seen no more.  Add in much money and murder which has alarmed Mud and her cousin Denny, and others (not so well meaning) to tracing the trail of these ills' perpetrator.  Grandpa himself had also disappeared after an SOS to Mud who was living and working away.  Where could he be?  Who would protect the traditions and culture now from unscrupulous people or  teach the future generations in the Kiowas' ways?

Added stress was the balancing act between the Kiowas ways and the white man's society and way of living.  An uneasy truce and task at times especially when there was an emergency at home and a pressing business situation   - out there, happening simultaneously.

The mystery and murder kept one buzzing along creating a pleasant read of multi-cultural interest.  What makes this book extra special is that the author herself, is of Kiowas decent.  However, whatever you do, never name the dead!

Proof of Love

Parents teach their children to share their toys with their siblings, cousins, and other children.  It is not easy to learn these things since human beings are often all about "self-interest".  Adults are often hard-pressed in sharing too.

So when we see Paul pressing the "giving message" home to his Corinthian "children," his strong and ingeniously articulated arguments are graciously spelled out to best possible generosity in giving and sharing in order to supply the lack for other "family members" in need.  His greatest argument is that example of Jesus Christ who gave Himself for us.

"Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift" (2 Corinthians 9:15 NIV)!

Proof of God's love!

Proof of our love, care and looking out for the interests of others, is our golden scepter for sharing what we have, according to what we have and according to what we have generously decided in our hearts to give, and to do so cheerfully.

Paul futher spurred the Corinthians on by mentioning the Macedonians again.  They were poor yet eager to give of their little.  Praise and thanks to God ensued, which is another of Paul's 'pro's' for willing giving.

God is our Supplier and He can keep on supplying as our hearts open up and overflow with generosity, so that downstream there is

"overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God" (2 Corinthians 9:12).

This type of giving Paul terms, "surpassing grace".  Our abundance is given by God and therefore divine giving.  From God, to you, to those in need, to offering praise to God; God supplying some more and so the cycle of sharing and giving perpetuates.

Let's abundantly prove our love that stems and originates from God's, again and again.

Lord's Day Devotion - Worthy Worship

 Father God
, You alone are worthy of all our praise and worship.  That is, our worthy praise, meaning that which flows from hearts that are right with You, that are filled with genuine love and gratitude.  Let it not be just lip-service, for show, but rather, worship with right hearts and right lips.  This, is worthy praise and worship to You, Father, Who is worthy of all we can give.

As Your children, it is our duty and priviledge to worship You our Creator and Sustainer, as we think of all Your attributes of perfection, love, holiness, goodness, omnipresence, omniscience, omnipotence and so much more.  You are great and bigger than all of Your creation combined.  Yet, you deemed it a worthy cause to send Jesus to die for all our transgressions and iniquities - our sins (Isaiah 53:5).  You had the determination to redeem us, to make atonement for our souls, which we had sold out to Satan.

Jesus, our blessed Redeemer, motivated by love and compassion for fallen mankind, provided salvation and that way of escape from the punishment of our sins, which would have been an eternal living death in Hell.  Oh, Father God, we indeed lift up our hearts in sincerity and truth, being as right as we can this side of Heaven, to offer up our thanksgiving, coated and marinated in gratitude-filled and humbled hearts that want, in all obedience and submission to You, to give You worthy worship.

This Lord's Day we give You thanks through the remembrance of Jesus' sacrificial death, and praise You, for His resurrection.  As we partake of the broken bread and sip from that cup of wine, emblems of this act of love for Your created but fallen human beings, we give You our worship, praise and thanksgiving from right and pure hearts and lips.  May both of these forever, starting today, give You the honor, glory and worthy worship that is due His Name.

In Jesus our Savior's most precious Name, we offer up our praise to You, the One Who is worthy to receive it.

Thank-You Father.

Thank-You, Jesus.

According to What You Have

Yesterday (30 October 2022), we had "Suffering Church Sunday" at our assembly.  We often connect with Barnabas Fund/Aid to help persecuted brothers and sisters-in-Christ who are more often than not, marginalized when their governments are giving aid to flood, earthquake, pandemic, famine and so on, victims.  Our brothers and sisters are missed out in the assistance offered otherwise.

This year, our church leadership has designated our giving to be for food in certain countries where the food crises is, and has been, advanced for several years and is only getting worse.  What do you know, but coincidentally the first thing I read from 2 Corinthians 8:1-7 this morning was about Paul instructing the Corinthians in their giving using the Macedonian churches, who were...

"...in the midst of a very severe trial...and their extreme poverty" (2 Corinthians 8:2),

as an example of wholehearted, genuine giving.

Of course, Paul says there needs to be "eager williness" to be giving cuz then,

"the gift is acceptable " (vs 11).

I always like how verse 12 ends, that the giving is,

"...according to what one has, not according to what one does not have".

It seems the Corinthian believers were rather better off than the Macedonians so there could also be little excuse for them to not give.  Yet, not everyone even in a wealthier region, has a lot.  Still, much or little, one can give "according to what one has".

Old Testament times asked for a tithe of 10% of "earnings".  It's a good baseline even in New Testament times now.  However, sticking to and restricting oneself to that rule of thumb may not be a sincere sacrifice from the heart.  We can examine ourselves and see what "the according" is for ourself.  Check ones' motivation as well.

Give so that we are supplying the needs of those who lack.  Galations 6:10 is my and my husband's 'go to' verse in this regard,

"Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially those who belong to the family of believers".

As mentioned earlier, governments who hate, harass and persecute believers for their faith in Jesus Christ, are not necessarily going to help them with food, medical and more, aid.  That's where those who belong to the family of God employ the grace of giving to help other family-of-God members.

It's up to us, brothers and sisters-in-Christ.  What and how much can you do according to what you have?

Do it, cheerfully.

The Best Angle

It's not always about marriage or business partners I realized just yesterday when reading 2 Corinthians 6 and 7.  When you plot the verses together such as 6:14; 7:1, 9 and 10, another angle is revealed.

So, first there's the,

"Do not be yoked together with unbelievers...what do righteousness and wickedness have in common..." (2 Corinthians 6:14).

This is the one we mostly quote to our children in regards to marriage partners and truly it is a good and needful application.  A believer in Christ needs to have a spouse who is also devoted to the Lord and walking in His ways.  There are plenty of other Bible verses and principles to corroborate this.  Hopefully then, the backbone of a marriage is founded on God's Word and lived in greater harmony because of it.  Enough said in this regard.

More on the 2 Corinthians 7:1.  The thoughts from chapter 6 are carried over, about our temples of the Holy Spirit being pure because this is what sons and daughters of God need to be.

"...let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God" (2 Corinthians 7:1 NIV).

"Everything that contaminates" is not just an unsaved partner with their worldly ways and foundational thinking and perspectives, as respectable as they may be.  As believers in Jesus Christ, we still have that sinful nature which lusts for things that do not please the Lord and that we need to guard against.  When we yield to temptations such as those the Apostle Paul listed,

"...sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft,; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies and the like..." (Galations 5:19-21 NIV).

Maybe we don't go to such extremes but there are likely one or two on that list, which tempt us and to perhaps, which we succumb.  Or, perhaps even read or view these things in movies, videos, or books and so on.  Somewhere, somehow, we get ourselves "contaminated".  We need to actively purify ourselves and practice perfecting holiness.

The motivating force for followers of Jesus Christ is as 2 Corinthians 7;1 states,

"...out of reverence for God."

Paul wanted to make the Corinthian believers sorrowful.  That sounds mean but he had good intentions for them in so doing.  He called it, "godly sorrow," and told them that this is what God intended.

Why?

So that they could perfect their holiness.

So they could repent of wrongs, confess them, gaining forgiveness from Jesus and yes, purification (1 John 1:9).

"Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation" (2 Corinthians 7:10 NIV),

Paul wrote.  He added that it produced many good things such as,

"...eagerness to clear themselves ... readiness to see justice done ..." (2 Corinthians 7:11 NIV).

The whole world learned about "purifying" and "keeping themselves pure" (or sanitized) during the COVID-19 pandemic that lasted about 2 years.  We all can probably recite the litany in our sleep:

"sanitize; wear masks; keep socially distanced; wash your hands for 20 seconds at time; stay home; vaccinate..."

Rigorous religious ritual to stay healthy and well and avoid contamination of ourselves and of others.

When we apply this sort of 'ritual" to our spiritual lives as believers in Jesus Christ, we will "purify ourselves" and "perfect holiness".  All this, not in leagalistic mindset but rather, "out of reverence for God."

Let us Christ-followers stop practices that contaminate our spirit; let us repent and confess them to the Lord and others as needed; let us live our lives being led by the Holy Spirit instead.  Let us not mar our testimony for the Lord nor bring ill-repute upon God and His family.

So, can you all see further implication and application of the 2 Corinthian 6:14 verse of being unequally yoked together and how our associations can lead to conflict between the righteousness of God in us and the wickedness of worldly living imbibed from associations with those who do not love the Lord their God with all their hearts, minds, souls, strength and do not have faith in Christ?  No doubt it's obvious and we may even "KNOW" it within ourselves.

As Paul exhorted the Corinthians, may godly sorrow bring each of us to repentance and let us eagerly clear ourselves of ungodly living.  In so doing, purify ourselves from all contamination.  Let's do it in Jesus' name for the glory of God out of reverence for Him.

This is the best angle to take.

There are enough spies and double agents in Our Man In Kuwait to keep you guessing as to who is and who isn't, one.  Above all, who is the elusive Agent Alex?  Gordon is right there in the middle of it, guessing too.

Then there was a murder and the Expat and Kuwaiti royals' scene were all abuzz to figure out who the murderer was, as tensions rose over a very possible Iraqi invasion.  Pinpointing the subversive elements as to who were the culprits secretly active undermining and attempting to bring the elite house down, was also imperative.

I enjoyed the pace of the unfolding action in this historical fiction, mystery thriller.  It was that too, thrilling.  I believe many readers will be well satisfied and will mull the heart-pounding drama over for days afterwards.  Don't let the poisonous snakes or scorpion get you.  Shivers!

The addenda includes a mini-history of the true events upon which this book is based.  The author having spent time in Kuwait as an expat child, adds great unction to the tale.

No Stumbling Block

My parents were dear souls.  They were very self-disciplined in many ways and practiced what they preached to their children first and then before others.  I'm talking about those issues that could be a stumbling block, that we'd trip over and consequently, quite possibly miss out on Christ and salvation.

Like Paul told the Corinthians,

"We put no stumbling block in anyone's path, so that our ministry will not be discredited" (2 Corinthians 6:3 NIV).

Take drinking of alcoholic beverages, for example.  The only such drinks my parents would imbibe were one tiny sip of wine every Lord's Day at the Breaking of Bread meeting (otherwise known as communion or the Lord's Supper).

Why?

They didn't want their children using their practices, even if in moderation, as an excuse to go all out in uncontrolled manner.  I know some may say here, well one needs to teach self-control along with drink and all else.  Well, this was my parents' conviction. Other people may operate otherwise.  I respect my parents for what they did in this regard.  No doubt they wouldn't have wanted to discredti their ministry either by drunkenness or other out-of-control practices.

Recently, I listened to two different preachers on the topic of "Is Drinking A Sin?"  My focus wasn't exactly on answering this question but it relates.  Both of those brothers-in-Christ state that they were "abstainers".

Why?

Reread the 2 Corinthians 6:3 verse again and take special note of...

"...so that our ministry will not be discredited."

Both men were very aware of what could happen and they wished to avoid being discredited due to lowered inhabitions and potential, subsequent unbecoming behavior.  They wanted to have all their faculties in tact to be able to govern their family and their church.  They did not want to put any stumbling block in anyone's path either, giving no one licence, because of them, to go on a drinking spree.

It seems I keep talking about drinking.  I'm using it only as an example.  There are plenty of other ways to mar one's testimony.  Brothers and sisters-in-Christ, let us each live circumspectly before our loving Heavenly Father and in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Let's honor Him with our lives lived for His glory.

Put no stumbling block in anyone's path.

Book Review - Mrs. Witherspoon Goes to War - By Mary Davis - Publication Date: 1 February 2022

This is a humorous, fun, thrilling, and tear-inpiring story of historical fiction set during WWII, stateside USA.  There is the romantic element and the Christian faith aspect of reliance upon the Lord in prayer, which I appreciated.  It gave the book extra purpose, at least to my way of thinking.

I enjoyed learning about the WASPs, that all female civilian corp of pilots that emerged during WWII to take up the slack for their male counterparts who went off to the war front. Peggy, aka WASP Witherspoon aka Mrs. Witherspoon, along with Jolene and Brownie are the main WASP heroines - intelligent, capable, not-to-be trifled with, pilots cum aviation mechancis, target practice bait and more.

The thing these gutsy girls got up to kerflummoxed Major  Berg who at first didn't think women could or should be engaged in such dangerous exploits.  I really love their mission impossible where they really heroically go to war.  Oh my, just wait til you get a hold of a copy and read for yourself!

As I read more and more about these WASPs from the Author's Notes at the end of the book which gives a brief history of these courageous women who just wanted to serve their country and aid the male soldiers however they could, I just wanted to give them all a big shouted cheer and salute.  I'm so glad author Mary Davis did her research homework and wove the WASP ways into a very enjoyable tale.

Yes, a 5-Star ovation from me on this one.

Book Review - Hereafter - By Vona Groacke - Publication Date: 15 November 2022

This biography follows the trail of the Irish diaspora, especially during the Potato Famine years.  The author leads us up a line of her own ancestors, mainly regarding her own great-grandmother Ellen.  This Ellen would have been young and single like a great many of her peers who had sailed forth to America in droves, to be servant girls in order to send funds back to their starving, destitute families.

The bread crumb trail was somewhat lacking so Vona Groacke (the author) surmises much based on history of such Irish lasses, in general, and bits and pieces she managed to ferret out of various archives and from relatives' talk to piecemeal them together.

It was interesting to a certain degree and I did learn somewhat of the plight and circumstances these brave young ladies endured.  However, I also got bogged down in the telling, frequently, sloughing through in fits and starts to find those morsels, which would attract me to carry on to the end.

Lord's Day Devotion - Exalt and Extol

Abba Father, we bless You, praise and exalt You in Jesus' name.  You alone are the One Who gives Your people strength and peace.

That peace that passes all our understanding through Jesus - the Prince of Peace - who sacrificed Himself for us, the sheep of Your pasture, so that we can have peace with You and the peace of God in our hearts and minds.  Jesus, Shepherd of our souls, we look up to You, exalting and extoling Your name with thanks and gratitude.

As we partake of the broken bread and sip from the cup of wine, which symbolize Your Son Jesus' accomplished work on the cross for our salvation and peace, this Lord's Day, we do remember Jesus until He comes for us.

We give You thanks for Your strength and peace we have through Jesus.  You alone are worthy of all our  honor, and praise.  We exalt and extol You and the name of Jesus in Whose name we praise and give You our heartfelt thanks.

Thank-You, Father God.

Thank-You, Jesus.

We look forward to praising You forever in Your Home above, O King of our strength and peace.

Book Review - A Thousand Tomorrows - By Karen Kingsbury - Publication Date 22 November 2022

A tender and heartbreaking story for both Cody Gunner and Ali Daniels, each fighting their own respective battles:  one with hate and bulls, and the other, a lifetime of cystic fibrosis.  I especially loved how Ali managed, with determination and resilience, to live and do life despite her serious condition.  Very positive vibes!  I also liked that this is a Christian faith-based narrative even though as a light 'dusting,' but it makes the story a clean read and I strongly appreciate this element in books I chance to read, this one included.

This is the first book in the author's new series of Cody Gunner.  I believe Karen Kingsbury fans will not be disappointed with yet another 'creation' of this prolific writer.  There are Reading Group Guide questions available at story's end for those who wish to delve deeper into the issues imbeded in this tale.
