Book Review - Cats - By Julianna Photopoulos - Publication Date: 14 April 2023

Kittens are almost always so sweet, cute and mischievously active, keeping most people entertained - and then they grow up into mature cats.  That last phrase might have a slightly negative undertone to it but cats with their independant behavior are not for everyone.

Nevertheless this great presentation of so many different breeds of cats is simply marvelous.  Perhaps, even able to 'win' naysayers over to the 'cat club'.  The great photo shoot illustrations of more breeds than I ever knew existed are revealed in this intriguing collection.

In my opinion, the short but sweet write-ups combined with their respective pictures would make this a great coffeetable centerpiece and become the topic of many a conversation.   It would be easy to pick up, leaf through at leisure, and/or put down after even a brief 'foray' among its pages.  I believe this book will delight many a viewer no matter the age group or feeling towards cats.

Lord's Day Devotion - Attitude of Humility

Suddenly you accepted Jesus as Savior and became "united with Christ" (Philippians 2:1).  You are a pearl of great price added to that 'necklace' God is crafting - Jesus being the thread that unites each one (see Matthew 13:45-46).

Each 'pearl' has its own qualitites and to be honest, its own flaws.  When we convert the pearl idea to human beings, the qualities and flaws being abruptly thrown together with other believers is a recipe to diaster and conflict.  The apostle Paul realized this.  Thus his several expressions of

"one spirit," "being united," "being like-minded," same love," and "being one in spirit and purpose" (Philippians 1:27; 2:1-3).

This reminds me of a book I recently read.  It's entitled, Creating a Healthier Church and is written by Ronald W. Richardson.  He starts out telling of two different churches, which on the same Sunday morning before service time, had a major maintainance problem to deal with.  The way each church handled their respective situation was totally opposite; one that worked together for positive outcome and the other, rigidity, misunderstanding and unfavorable outcome with many toes stepped on and ill-feeling against one another.

Richardson used two terms:  fusion and differentiation.  What I understand (but could be wrong), I'll briefly define.  'Fusion' being a mostly negative scenario which involves a lot of 'self' while 'differentiation' is mostly postive, objective and thinking of others, working as a united team and not worrying whether it was on your job description or not, working towards a favorable purposed outcome.

What the apostle Paul lovingly prayed for was this differentiation.  Believers looking out for

"the interests of others" (Philippians 2:4).

When you suddenly have so many different people thrown together - those from different families, environments, birth orders, experiences and degree of 'wickedness', or addiction, albeit saved by grace, yes, but only just beginning on that road of progressive sanctification, sticky situations could ensue.  There could be the tendancey towards looking only toward ones own interests.

The better way is in the attitude of humility.  When each individual takes responsibility for their own attitude, molding it to like-mindedness but especially to Christ Jesus' attitude, greater unity in Christ can potentially be promoted.

When brothers and sisters-in-Christ imitate Christ, there will be the virtue of humility.  This attitude thinks of themselves less and more of others.  It's like that definition of C.S. Lewis' about humility...

"True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less."

This is exactly what Jesus did and you can read about it in Philippians 2:1-11.  Jesus who is God, came to earth but did not consider Himself equal status to God even though He was, and still is.  This makes me think that no matter what position we have in life, that when we come together with other believers at church, that we leave our 'titles' and accolades outside in the car or at home.  Jesus left His in Heaven.

Jesus, the Prince of Peace, Son of God, the almighty King of kings and Lord of lords, took the nature of a servant!  A servant.   Think that through.  This is such a characteristic of humility.  Definitely not thinking of self.

Rather, Jesus came as a human being baby,  He was

"found in appearance as a man".

As a created being instead of the Creator He is.  Do you find it mind-boggling to ponder upon?  Jesus fully God showed up as "fully man".

We are often rebellious human beings but Jesus was always obedient to His Father's will.  He was

"obedient to death - even death on a cross" (Philippians 2:8).

Mind you, this was not a robotic obedience.  No, Jesus' fully man part struggled in the Garden of Gethsemane but came through declaring,

"...not my will but yours be done" (Luke 22:39-46).

He was thinking of Himself less and more of those He had come to save.  As one Zac Poonen of India has reputedly said,

"Sin came through the pride of Lucifer but salvation came through the humility of Jesus".

Jesus, is our perfect example of humility.  He was humble and had the attitude of humility.  This, Paul so wanted the Philippian believers to be and to have.  Let us too, enshroud ourselves with an attitude of humility.  Allow humility to be infused into our beings so we will indeed be one in spirit and purpose, working together for the glory of God and Jesus Christ.

This Lord's Day, give thanks for Jesus' humility and what it accomplished for us.  Keep in mind that He did this for you, for me and the "whosoever will".  Partake of the broken bread and drink of the cup of wine in grateful thanks, learning to be of the same mind and attitude of Christ Jesus.

Lay a deep foundation of humility in order to build a strong bond of unity with fellow-believers and so build each other up in their most holy faith, creating a strong church or assembly to honor our Savior and Servant and to be more like Jesus in our attitude, thinking more of others, and of ourselves, less.

Father God, we need to bow our knees to You in humble attitude, confessing the name of Jesus whom You've now exalted to the highest place and have given Him a name that is above every name.  He is our Supreme Example of humility and we give You our thanks and praise.

Thank you for giving us Jesus the Servant King and Savior, whom we can now follow and for uniting us with Him!  May we each have such humility too and be one in spirit and purpose for Your Kingdom.  Thank-You for Your Holy Spirit's empowerment for so doing.

In Jesus' most powerful name we pray and remember through the breaking of bread, this Lord's Day.

Victorious Overcomers - Philadelphia

Does your heart go out to the people of the church in Philadelphia?

The expression, 'small but mighty' comes to mind in that they were described as having "little strength" yet they'd kept God's "word and didn't deny Jesus' name" (Revelation 3:8).  They were "faint yet pursuing"(Judges 8:4), like Gideon and his men in the Old Testament times; they'd been battle weary yet they continued on.

The church at Philadelphia brothers and sisters-in-Christ had patiently endured and had the hope of Jesus "coming soon."  This hope can be a bulwark, reassuring us too, in our day.  And the trials and tribulations that loom large in our scope, ccan be minimized and overcome by viewing the end, setting the goal before us.  This is what overcomers do with the help of the Holy Spirit.  Our God will never leave us nor forsake us (see Deuteronomy 31:6 and Hebrews 13:5).

Let us continue to run His race set out before us until we are 'raptured' before that big and terrible day that will come upon the whole world.  When we endure, then the name of His city will be written on us.  People will know "you have been with Jesus" (see Acts 4:13) by your perseverence and manner of life lived for His glory and honor.

Book Review - The Wreckage of Light - By Jos Gordon - Publication Date: 10 September 2023

There are so many strong characters, Knox and Crew being two of them that work and live against great odds.  Lots of action and reaction.  The narrative is filled with multicultural interest - namely the whites vs the Ulayu.  Racism is rife and the ensuing hate and brutality that abounds against each other will make you stop and give you pause.  However, the author explains this setting scenario.

Betrayal clatters in and there is some paranormal activity, which adds mystery.  It's very believable though but could there be any acceptance from either side of the ethnic divide that may even provide a bridge of understanding?!  And what does the 'owl' have to do with it all?  Tantalising romance is laced through this bewitching saga.  Being left hanging on at the end will likely leave the reader panting for the proposed next book in the series, I believe.

There is a precaution with content that some readers may wish to be aware of and that is all the 'stahl'-ing that happens whenever, wherever, seemingly unabated.  You'll have to check out the useful glossary of the Ulayu language provided at book's end.  Ok, you may be able to guess that to 'stahl' is very intimate action.

A 4-Star rating from me.

Victorious Overcomers - Sardis

The Sardis overcomers were awake and completing the good deeds God had given them to do.  They had received, heard, obeyed and repented of lethargy and went on to strengthen what remained to be done.

This puts me in mind, so much, of how Christians in general, operated during and post Covid-19 era.  It was so much easier just to stay at home and continue to stay at home and not have to participate in person in church activities and ministries for the Lord, His people and for the unsaved, not lifting much of a finger to engage in evangelism work and/or building others up in their most holy faith.

Things have slowly improved but we still need to fully WAKE UP!  Now.  Be overcomers and complete the course of deeds set out for us each to do.  The Sardis folks were "dressed in white"; clean, pure and were worthy.  Jesus acknowledged them and does not blot them out of His book of life.

Our perfect example, of course is Jesus, who had so set His face towards Jerusalem, determined to fulfil the reason and purpose He was sent to earth.  He bought our pardon on the cross, redeeming our souls, and making us children of God when we accept this free gift of salvation.  It is only through Jesus we can have our names written in His Lamb's Book of Life.

It's heady stuff to see your name written in a book, especially if you are the author or an editor or a reviewer of books.  Here overcomers are on the LIFE LIST, not the DEATH LIST.  May each one reading this have life in Christ and be able to find his or her name on God's list in His book of LIFE, then go pro-actively forth and complete the good deeds God sets out for you to do.  I ask it in Jesus' name.

Book Review - Embracing Joy - By Jean Wilund - Publication Date: 5 September 2023

I deeply appreciate this author's in-depth look at the book of Habakkuk, and Habakkuk's interactions with God during very distressing times in his life and God's actions seemingly against the nation of Israel.  I feel that serious readers who wish to delve genuinely into seeking greater knowledge and understanding of God's Word, will and ways will greatly appreciate this study.

This study kept my pen to the pages of my journal, responding to what the author was expounding about, helping to bring forth ones' own thoughts and feelings regarding what was happening in Habakkuk's time but that also relates to the current times.  The spiritual exercises will keep one engaged in what is said and create plenty of time to keep a person on their knees in humble prayer before the Lord.

Jean Wilund, the authoress, has written this eight week study of Habakkuk with group study questions, memory verses, daily conviction prayers and so forth.  It has been one of my best 'grow book' reads in a while.  I do recommend it to those readers who would also like to learn more about God's Sovereignty.

Book Review - When the People Pray - By Thom S. Raines - Publication Date: 5 September 2023

In many churches, October is the pray-for-your-pastor month.  This 30 Day Devotional feels like a huge, great boon and gift for those who wish to pray for and show their pastor and his/her family their appreciation and support.

Each day includes a main theme such as:  wisdom, weddings, funerals, temptations, comparisons, joy and so many more.  An appropriately targeted bible verse follows, after which is a reflection based on true life anecdotes, and then an actual, helpful prayer to pray for the pastor.

I really like how these devotionals are arranged.  They are short, sweet and simply put to the point.  Certainly an overall great way to show ones' appreciation by praying for the pastor.

This book could be used by individuals but it seems that praying as a congregation is encouraged as the reader will discover modes for group praying in teams and explaining key actions in implimenting the prayer groups and gatherings.

I was quite excited to come across this devotional as it seems very user friendly, while still giving attentive believers a way for pro-active quality praying.  As some denominations do not have clergy, I still say that this devotional can be used to pray for the spiritual leaders in any given gathering so that they too will stay true to the Lord and be encouraged by those to whom they teach and preach.
