Signal Them to Christ

The other day I saw a story about a lady who had been out in the middle of the ocean for about 12 hours.  The water temperature that day was recorded at 66 F (18.8 C).  She had no protective gear, in fact, she had been skinny dipping at midnight.  Somehow or another, the currents carried her  away.  There was nary a soul in sight but dolphins did keep her company; so the story went.

Sometime the next day, a sailor was sailing his sailboat off the coast when he saw the dolphins cavorting.  "Oh, how nice!  It's always fun to see dolphins," he voiced to his companions.

Then, "What?  Huh!? Did I see correctly?  Did I see a human hand rise up among the dolphins?!"  Mr. Sailor Man queried his crew of two or three who were learning the sailing ropes.

He watched some more.  "OH, there it was again," he pointed out, but still not sure he was just seeing a dolphin fin.  He went closer and found that, "oh, it is a human  hand!" which they discovered, belonged to the skinny dipper.

She was so cold she could barely help herself and had to rely on the strength of the skipper-sailor and crew to haul her into the boat to safety until the Search & Rescue came to whisk her off to the hospital.  Her rescue had depended upon another and perhaps even thanks to dolphins.

There was another 'ocean' - it  was called "The society of Judah" in ancient times.  Most of the citizens had incorrigibly turned away from God to idol worship and all the heathen practices associated.  God's judgement, "The Great Day of the LORD" was imminent.  Yet, the word of God through Zephaniah, the prophet, gave warning to the "shameful nation".

If by any infinitesimal chance there were any humble and righteous among the nation's citizens, whistleblower Zephaniah, like the dolphins with the lady, signaled hope.  He said,

"Seek the LORD, all you humble of  the land, you who do what He commands.  Seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the LORD's anger" (Zephaniah 2:3 NIV).

The humble and righteous ones would have been barely keeping their heads above water, so to speak.  They would have been faint yet pursuing.  Society of that day would have barely noticed they themselves had gone so far away, and they didn't really seem to care either.  Praise the Lord, though, God had His 'salt and light', whom He sought and desired to spare.

He's still doing this today.  Most societies around the world have given up on morals that count with God and tally with His word and principles.  Those who desire to do His will, will feel like they are drowning in all the immorality and errant ways of the general global populace.  However, we can still seek the Lord, through Jesus our Rescuer.  We can still seek righeousness and humility.  In Jesus we find our solace and motivation to raise our hand and if it be possible, let our salt and light reflect Jesus for the benefit of those who are actually drowning,  signalling them to Christ.
