Sheep-ly

"Did you think of yourself more sheep-ly today?" asked a Crossway devotional I read today.

Good question.  God's Word tells us...

"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned-every one-to his own way;..."  (Isaiah 53:6)

Followers of Jesus Christ could be compared to sheep.  In Bible times, and maybe even now in Middle Eastern culture, sheep followed a shepherd.  The shepherd kept  the  sheep safe from the dangers of wolves, lions, snakes and the like.  The shepherd found green pastures and still waters for his sheep.  The sheep knew their shepherd's voice.

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:  and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand."  John 20:27-28

Yet as sheep nibble grass, they do go astray.  If one sheep exits through a hole in the fence (western sheep herding), chances are many of the others will follow suit.

They need to stay close to the shepherd to be kept safe, and well-fed and watered, to survive.

Jesus is pictured as the Good Shepherd.  The apostle John writes Jesus' Words in John 10:11,

"I am the good shepherd.  The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep."

I'm thinking of that.  What a very good kind of shepherd to have.  Safety.  Security.  The sheep willing to follow such a shepherd is a good kind of "sheep-ly"; a following "sheep-ly", not a straying "sheep-ly".

I love my Good Shepherd Jesus.  I want to be a good "sheep-ly".

"What type of "sheep-ly" are you?"  I ask sheepishly.

Merry and Bright

Many religions of the world have a god, &/or a plethora of gods.  For example, First Nation people of Canada have their "Great Spirit" or "Transformers", one of whom was Glooscap of the Mi'kmaq; the people of the Islamic belief have Allah; the Hindus have Brahma, Sarswati, Vishnu, Shiva and many others; Judaism has several different names for their one God:  Adonai; El; Eloah; Shaddai and others while the followers of Jesus Christ, have God.   This shows that human beings believe that there is someone (or many someones) they feel they need to look up to.  There is someone in control.

The great King Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, wrote in Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV),

"He has made everything beautiful in its time.  He has also set eternity in the human heart..."

The human spirit has a natural god-conscious 'setting' within them.

This is a huge difference compared to the Buddhist belief that an individual does not need a god or gods to help them.  In fact, there is no god, they say.  An individual can be in control of their self through training their mind to do what is right and good, and needs no help from anyone, especially not from a god outside of their self.

Of note, however, they meditate along a fine line.  The fine line meaning, to onlookers it may really seem  like they have Buddha as their god.  It is encouraged that the meditator sit in front of a statue or picture of Buddha, thinking of their Four Noble Truths and Eight-Fold Path of Enlightenment as to how they can be applied to their lives.  It is said that this is done to show respect to the man who gave them their way of life through his teachings. (pages 262-264 What Buddhists Believe by Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda)

They do not need a Supreme Being to save or help them.  They do believe in the existence, of 'Devas' (deities) with whom they can...

"share their merits or remember them whenever they do some meritorious deeds" (page 391 of What Buddhists Believe by author Dr. K. Sri Dhammanada).

By self-sufficiency one can earn one's own salvation and even share merits with deities.    One could say, they are their own god.

Please don't get me wrong here; I'm not holding anyone's belief in contempt.  My hope and prayer is that these thoughts will trigger some soul searching of your own, for your good and benefit, for a more excellent way.  It is that way in which we can bring the burden of our salvation and hope of righteousness to God and His Son Jesus Christ who has already taken upon Himself that burden.

So who or what are we to believe?

It is the Christmas season as I type.  The reason for the season, the coming of Jesus as a babe in a manger.  I believe in this one true God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent.  Buddhists declare they investigate in scientific ways.  Please do also.  Examine what all other gods do or do not do for the human race.  Are they 'giving' gods or 'taking' gods?

The Judeo-Christian God, who made heaven and earth, the sky and sea and all that in them are, the Almighty Creator God; He gives and gives and gives (Psalm 144:6; 1 Corinthians 8:6).  He is the ever faithful one.

Remember John 3:16...

"For God so loved the world that He gave His One and only Son..." (emphasis mine)

He loved.  He gave.

There is a belief that if one can do enough good deeds, there will hopefully be enough merit to outweigh the bad deeds; that these equal enough merit to attain righteousness and salvation.  But how does one ever know when there is enough?

I introduce God who loves, who gives and who is righteous.  He is righteous!  Jesus came to

"declare His righteousness for the remission of sins..." (Romans 3:25)

He came to

"declare...His righteousness; that He might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus" (Romans 3:26).

Jesus was born into this world, righteous.  Thus He did not have to attain righteousness.  That is why He can be the "justifier" of every single last human being in the world:  past, present and future.  He came into the world with the purpose to die for the atonement of the sins of the human race (some want to call sin, bad or unwholesome deeds).  He died so we human beings could be justified and God could impute His righteousness to each and every human being who, of their own free will, will believe and accept this wonderful gift of God's love.  This gift God offers through Jesus death and resurrection.  What a mighty God He is!

He loves.  He gives.  He makes righteous.  Look at what 2 Corinthians 5:21 relates...

"God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God."

Read Romans 4:6 (KJV)...

"Even as David also describes the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputes righteousness without works."

Take note of the remaining of the John 3:16 verse (NIV) for what else God gave along with righteousness...

"...that whoever believes in Him (Jesus) shall not perish but have eternal life."

Isn't that amazing!  The believer will live for ever with eternal life and eternal God-given righteousness.  No one has to earn it or stock up merits in the hope that God will accept them.  He accepts each one as they are.

Oh person who believes in any other god or who only believes in their self, can you match your god or yourself to Elohim (Hebrew connoting God as the Creator and Judge of the universe [Genesis 1:1-2:4a])?

Or to Hannoten Teshuah, Hebrew, meaning "The Giver of Salvation" (Psalm 144:10).  Jesus is that "Giver of Salvation", the Deliverer of the human race; our God and Savior.

"I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no Savior" (Isaiah 43:11).

Jesus delivers the believer from the deadly wages of sin.  For the Buddhist, suffering, death and hell are the results of bad and unwholesome deeds (pages 189-190 What Buddhists Believe).  Jesus rescues one and all from that pit of eternal damnation.

"The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ."  (Romans 6:23 NIV).

Again in Ephesians 2:8 (NIV)...

"By grace are you saved, through faith (NOT WORKS)-and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God."

God's gifts are always "good and perfect" (James 1:17 NIV).

Won't you accept that this God is, and receive His gift of salvation and righteousness through Jesus Christ?

Then you can truly celebrate His birth, death and resurrection; Christmas and Easter all bundled into one.  Your days, months, years and eternity ahead will indeed be merry and bright as you put your faith and trust in Him for daily living despite any situation you may be experiencing.  And this all because of what God has given through Jesus Christ.

                                               ~ERC  December 2017~

P.S.  It is very good to read the whole book of Romans in the Bible.  It is in this book that we see how God sees those who have accepted His gift of salvation.  He sees us as if we had never sinned.  He has made us righteous in HIS sight.  Justified us through Jesus Christ and our belief in Him.

Yet as we also read the book of James, we will learn that how we are seen through man's eyes, that with our faith in Jesus Christ, we must also do works.  Works NOT to earn our own salvation rather as a proof of our faith.  An example of an Old Testament figure, that of Abraham and his faith in God prompted him to act upon his faith in God.

Therefore we read such verses as follows from James 2:22-24 (ESV)...

"You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness"-and he was called a friend of God.  You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone."

It is after we have put our faith in Jesus Christ for our salvation that we then learn that He prepared good works for us to do (Ephesians 2:10).  We do well to put our faith into action out of our love and relationship with God and His Son Jesus Christ.   ~erc~

Stay On His Altar

About sacrifice...giving so it hurts.  They say if it doesn't hurt its not sacrifice.  God gave His all in Jesus and that cost Him dearly.  Costly grace.

The thought came as I was reading Romans 12:1 what a sacrifice it is to actually live out purity in this day and age; "presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice".

It's so easy to start with one little kiss. One little kiss can ignite great flames of passion.

Keeping marriage pure may well be a sacrifice for some.  Forsaking all others for your "one and only".  Ironically, that should be more of a pleasure and honor.

I'd encourage young people especially, in this type of sacrifice, to honor God with their bodies.

Christian young people (but marrieds too), your bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit of the Almighty Living God.  STOP!  Consider that a minute.  You, your body, is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).  When we can get a grip on this miraculous phenomenon, there's a lot more we will do and not do in the way of honoring God our ever-loving Heavenly Father.

Out of that reciprocal love, honor and respect, the sacrifices we make will no longer be so burdensome or painful; rather that out-pouring of "holy and acceptable to God....spiritual worship" (ESV).  In turn will be the blessing of a guided life into the purity God so desires for us all.

Romans 12:2 commands,

"Do not be conformed to this world..."

This world throws out and tramples all that "holy, holy stuff".

When the rubber hits the road of conforming to Christ instead of the world, that will truly be sacrifice.  It may cost you friendship with that handsome boy or sweet girl; or friendships with others who do not see it God's way; you may be scoffed at and/or humiliated.  That's part of the price of sacrifice.

Romans 12:1 calls it a "living sacrifice".  If you put a live animal on an altar, do you suppose it will stay there? When things start to get hot, it definitely won't.  Thus, it is a choice to stay up there (metaphorically speaking) and live God's way.

Praise the Lord we do not have to do it alone though.  Christians, we each have the Holy Spirit indwelling us.  Recall one of the fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22-24; "self-control".

I really like what I read from another devotional about the Ministry of the Holy Spirit written by Julie Gossack (produced by Crossway [a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers]).  Gossack said...

"Self-control...which is often translated "sober," is a sober-mindedness that gives thought before acting.  Self-control, which is produced by the Holy Spirit, gives way to godly desires rather than sinful desires.  A person with self-control looks to future and eternal realities rather than indulging immediate sinful impulses."

We do not have to do this kind of daily sacrificing on our own.  We can work in tandem with the Lord's help.  Yet we need to make that choice to allow Him to work in us.\

Recently a preacher gave the illustration of getting into your vehicle and putting the key in the ignition but not turning the key to start the car.  You've got the key; you've got to "turn it on".  Actually not "it" but HIM.  We have the Holy Spirit indwelling, we need to allow Him to work.

Some folks call it "exercising the Spirit".  Yes, we need to let Him get some exercise; the more we do, the greater He can influence our lives for good.  Stay on His altar as a "living sacrifice" in all areas of our life and certainly in the area of purity.  Keep yourselves pure for your spouse no matter the cost.  It is "good...acceptable and perfect" in God's sight.

A further Bible verse to ponder from Galatians...

"Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires."  (Galatians 5:20 NIV)

May you each, "by God's mercies and grace", be a "living sacrifice" for Him.

Stay on His altar.

Grace to Bite Your Tongue

Perfection and righteousness sound mighty good to me.  In trials, seek God's wisdom.  That's James' advice.

Have a look in James chapter 1.

Human nature tends to be impatient, to be slow to hear, quick to speak and quick kindling to anger.  We are often impatient with our trials that are guiding us towards steadfast faith, towards greater wisdom, perfection, completion; and that good and perfect gift, the crown of life.  When will these trials blow over?!

Someone sent me a video clip of some dynamic preacher talking about the children of  Israel having to circle that Mount Sinai for forty years in the desert place til they learned their lesson.  Around and around and around.  No doubt they must have felt, "enough, already!"  And the preacher went on saying "we pray that God takes away that mountain.  But folks the mountain is there to change us!!"    That trial folks is there to change you.  You have two choices, to change positively, or to change negatively.

Look at God's gift when we change positively.  When God gives, He gives and gives and that generously.  On top of the steadfastness, perfection, and crown of life, God imputes to us His righteousness.  We become more like Him.  His character can be seen in those who seek Him and His wisdom.  Are you wise?  Ask for His wisdom.

And He is not finished yet...when we can do all of the above, we will "receive with meekness the implanted word..."  I love the idea of meekness.  It's big.  I definitely need it big time.  Glad it's part and parcel of what God gives as we become more complete in Him.

Isn't this what many aim to attain?  Righteous.  Something from the core of our being that naturally produces righteousness?  The "filthiness and rampant wickedness" of human nature weeded out from the root gives way to the righteousness.  So don't you want to be tried with "trials of many kinds"?  Hah!

We don't purposely seek trials but when they come, embrace them with joy because its good for you.  It really is, believe it or not, in the end.  That's what God says.

I think of snowflakes.  Each and every single one is the same, only different.  They each have six points but in individual intricate design.  What a Creator!

God knows exactly what each individual needs.  Look into His mirror.  Don't go away and forget what He shows you.  Address it.  Are you impatient with your aging?  Impatient with an ill family member; your child or parent or spouse?  Got trouble at work?  Those can be veritable mountains for sure.

What are the negative things that come out in your character?  Confess them to the Lord.  Seek His forgiveness.  Let Him root out all unrighteousness.  Don't just read about it.  Act upon it; "be a doer".  Get clear of the negatives.

Realize you can't do this alone.  Seek God's wisdom.  You, Christian, have the Holy Spirit and God's Word, what are you waiting for?  Progress in your sanctification.

Non-Christian, come humbly to God through Jesus Christ.  There is salvation in no other (Acts 4:12).  Righteousness is attained from no other.   It is not something you have to work at for yourself. Furthermore you can have salvation NOW; not at some vague, uncertain distant time.

Look what God tells us human kind:

Galatians 2:16-17 (ESV)...

"..yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Jesus Christ, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified."

Galatians 2:20 (ESV)...

"I have been crucified with Christ.  It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.  And the life I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me."

Galatians 3:10 (ESV)...

"For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them."

Colossians 1:22 (ESV)...

"...and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator."

Last, but not least, Romans 6:22...

"But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life."

What a mighty God we have!  He knows we are such completely helpless human beings who cannot save ourselves for trying.

It is by God's grace we are saved.  It is by God's grace we endure our trials.

Christians,

"do not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up" (Galatians 6:9).

It is by God's grace we stand.  Someone says something to put you down or make you feel like you and your opinions are only worth two cents or less, God's grace is sufficient for you.

It is a trial; yes!  But His grace is sufficient for you to bite your tongue and NOT respond in kind.   Rather, your response can be with grace to keep your mouth shut and to expunge the biting retort you'd soooo love to give.  Maybe to walk away and pray.  Ask for wisdom for gracious rejoiners and kind words.

Let me tell you...that's a huge challenge!  But...

"...as you have opportunity,...do good to everyone..." (Galatians 6:10).

Pass the test again and again; let our Heavenly Father bathe you in His grace helping you along righteous street, completion, perfections, the crown of life and towards meekness.  Be steadfast in grace and love throughout all those various trials.

He loves you!  You are special to Him.  You are of great worth to Him!

Here is a quote from W. Phillip Keller's book Wonder O'the Wind.  He quotes something his Dad said to him...

"It's the man who stands to his feet over and over who finally wins the battle."

May God bless you all as you strive to become more like Him, remaining steadfast in ever increasing faith in Him till He comes to take us to be with Him.

Perhaps today.

Skipping Stone Ripples & Circles of Honor

Have you ever tried to skip stones across a peaceful pond or calm lake?  The skip point sends out ever widening concentric circle ripples and if the 'skip' is close enough, those circles eventually intersect each other.  It's quite fun to try to do this.  One of my brothers invariably was able to do this better than I.

These were the thoughts I had after my morning Bible devotions today.  I'm working on a reading plan called "When Faith Catches Fire" written by Samuel Rodriguez and Dr. Robert Crosby.  Today's text was taken from John 17:21-22.  The authors ask if anyone has ever thought to answer Jesus' prayer where He asks His Father God that may all His disciples...

"be one, just as You, Father, are in me, and I in You, that they also be in us,"

Verse 21 finishes...

"so that the world may believe that you have sent me."

Jesus further asks His Father...

"May they be one even as we are one...." (verse 22)

Rodriguez and Crosby say that we all expect Jesus to answer our prayers we ask of Him, but do we ever consider answering His, as seen in these verses?

New concept to me.

I like how they explained how they thought this could be brought about.  They say to "draw circles of honor" around people.  Not false flattery but sincere words of praise or encouragement, not just to an individual but in the hearing of others.  This builds others up instead of tearing them down.

The opposite can happen when we slander another which usually gets done behind another's back creating ugly situations.  The words usually get back to the one spoken against.  That's where the tearing down comes in.

Yet, when we purpose to praise, and in front of others, a "circle of honor" will materialize.  That person will then be uplifted and enabled to do so for another.  This helps to bring greater unity in our circle of friends and family and no less among the people of God in any given congregation.  This, in turn, brings forth that unity God desires.

So can you visualize all this?  Can you visualize why the skipping stone image?

As we choose to create "circles of honor" here, and there, you will be "answering" Jesus' prayer.

Rodriguez and Crosby end with the question,

"Who are some of the people you want to honor this week?"

Let us be doers and not just hearers of God's word, and of godly wisdom spoken by His children.  Skip a few stones along your way today.  Happy skipping and 'circling'.

Refreshing Wells

Looking for verses about a connection between salvation and happiness I happened upon Isaiah 12:3, which really 'spoke' to me.  Here's what it says...

"With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation."

It struck my fancy and got me cogitating about wells, water, springs, geysers and fountains.

Once upon a time while growing up we got water from a well at our house in Sambro, Nova Scotia, Canada.  There's good and not so good about that.  The good is it had refreshing water with none of the additives a city run water supply would dump into the water.  The not so good was that in the summer we had to really ration the water because the well could run dry.  In the winter we had to stick a big light down the well to keep the water from freezing solid.

The waters from the well were there to give us life and 'save' us yet it could and would and did fail us at times.  It didn't always 'save' us, we had to 'save' it.

And that is just like salvation.  We cannot earn it in any way, shape or form.  Works or keeping a set of laws, even when they are good morals and lead us to have right and better thinking so that our actions will be good, the 'well' itself cannot save us.  We need the Living Water, Jesus Christ (John 4:1-14).  His well is never empty and never puts a freeze on anyone trying to 'drink'.  Drink freely and find great joy in salvation through Jesus Christ; He is the one who earned this privilege for one and all who avail themselves thereof.

Then there was the little spring that was behind our Sambro house.  It was unobtrusive yet had a wee-sized might of its own.  It ran from the back of the house and wound around to the side and then down to the drainage ditch out the front.  It minded its own business and pressed on with its springing, watering the area as it meandered along.

In the winter my Dad and brother would harness the water with a wee dam and create a mini ice-skating rink for us kids which was also a magnet for some of the other neighborhood children.  We had grand times imagining ourselves as great figure skating divas or ice-hockey stars.  There was a lot of joy from that wee spring.

When we come to salvation through Jesus Christ, the joy of the Lord can be our strength and there is no limit to that.  We can draw from this 'well', again and again.

From wells and springs my mind then jumped to Old Faithful, the geyser.  It was named a way back in 1870, according to Wikipedia, and since the year 2000 'geysers' every 44-125 minutes.  When it spouts up its boiling hot water, it can often sustain as long as 1 1/2 to 5 minutes doing so.  Amazing.  Awesome.  I have never seen this with my own eyes unfortunately,  but just thinking of it stands me in awe.  How magnificent it must be close up.  Well, not too close.

May I direct your attention to a key word here; faithful.  Old Faithful was named in 1870, but it must have been gushing forth for ages prior.  It is still ongoing.  Our God is the ever faithful one.

``The LORD Himself goes before you and will be with you, He will never leave you nor forsake you.``  Deuteronomy 31:8.

These words are repeated in Hebrews 13:5.  Granted for a different reason, yet despite our situation in life, God`s promise to be with us and to never forsake us, still stands.  That sounds a lot like faithfulness to me and encourages me to press on with life.  Once we have salvation through God`s Son Jesus Christ, we are secure.  Does this thought and promise give you joy...it does for me.  That springs from the well of salvation.

And then fountains were mentioned...

Picture in your mind a fountain in the middle of a town square.  Cobble stones surround.  It`s summer and hot.  The fountain cascades water in circumference and children splash and squeal with gleeful abandon playing under and in the water falling gently upon them.   There are several adults dodging in and out; parents attending to their offspring.  It`s cooling and joyful.  Relaxing, and relief from the heat.

Other adults won`t be caught dead frolicking publicly there like a child.  They hurry on their way.

That`s like salvation.  Those who choose to accept Jesus as Savior can have their burdens lifted.  He gives rest (Matthew 11:28).  Perhaps the troubles they may have do not go away, but they can find relief; Someone to confide in who really cares.  May His love and care cascade upon you as that fountain.  This too, comes from the well of salvation.

Draw again and again from the refreshing wells of salvation and may you have the joy that accompanies.

Out of the Blue - A Story - Part 25-27

Blue Topaz
Part 25

The friends and folks in Borneo were all a-flutter; their Ruth E was getting married and she had invited any who could come!!

Likely none of them could but if they pooled their resources one or two of them might brave the "great-unknown-world-across-the seas" where Ruth E comes from.

Jacey and Jacinth had both gotten personal emails inviting them to be her bridesmaids.  Would they come if Shem and she sponsored their tickets?

Would they??  Of course they would!  "Oh but Ruth E we are scared to death to go to your world!!"

Ruth E had to calm them with many an email and map out just what they'd need to do:  valid passports; some warmer clothes; they'd send them the e-tickets; explanation step-by-step through immigration and visa obtaining, etc.

"Over here," she'd told them, "we eat, sleep and go to the toilet as much as you do over there; just maybe a little bit differently.  But, don't worry, we will eat some rice when you come.  Fret not.  My Mother will take the best of care of you.  She knows what to do as she learned from me," Ruth E assured them.

In the end the villagers decreed that the headman and his wife would accompany Jacey and Jacinth as they were the ones who could speak some English (Ruth E wondered what happened to all the ones she'd taught English to but figured they were apprehensive of coming).  The headman and his wife were only tolerable at English but she was so pleased at least these four would come.

The others sent so many congratulatory emails; some wanting to know all about this Dr. Shem guy.  He better treat her well or they would all come and teach him some tribal discipline.  Was he a Christian they wanted to know; and many other things.

Finally Ruth E sent out a general email to them all describing Dr. Shem and his girls and telling them, "Yes, he's a Christian and loves God very much.  He even does some mission work too."

That quelled their misgivings as to whether or not this Dr. Shem was a good man.  After all, he kind of came out of the blue and snatched their Ruth E away.  Ruth E had to laugh but all this endeared them to her even more.  She was still very much one of their family and they were looking out for her.  Shem was somewhat chagrined by all the censureship but understood their love and protectiveness of their 'family' member.  Ruth E was a precious person and he'd do his best not to take her for granted.

Ruth E was a bit saddened that none of her Borneo branch members would be able to attend but she knew the logistics of all that would be tricky.  She thanked them for their advance wedding gift and for their love, prayers and moral support.

Hannah and Heather were besides themselves to be asked to be flower girls but turned their noses up when Ruth E told them there would be ring bearers.  However when she explained that they'd be their cousins, that was ok then, they'd suffer it out.  Ha, ha.

Sapphire was well pleased to be asked to be maid-of-honor but felt Ruth E should postpone the wedding for another few months so she would have a chance to lose some weight.  Ruth E laughed, "You look fine enough Sapphy.  You lose too much you'll dry up and blow away.  We can't have that."

"I suppose you are correct as usual," Sapphire conceded, "but you know, you never know if I can catch the eye of the best man."

"The best man is your cousin Navy," Ruth E giggled gleefully. "He'll be eyeing others."

"Phewy!  Why must we have so many cousins!"  Sapphire mourned.

"Well, there will be one of Josie's brothers as a groomsman; perhaps he'll do?" offered Ruth E.

"Nothin' doin'!" Sapphire fired back, "He's not my type."

"Seems there's many who aren't your type Sapphy; there's no one perfect ya know, not even though made especially for you."

"I know," sighed Sapphire.  "That's why its a shame we have so many cousins who are such fine up and out-standing men.  By comparison, all others pale."

"Oh Sapphire!  I found one."

"Yeah, just my luck-you won him!  He doesn't have any long lost brothers that you know of does he?"  Sapphire lamented hopefully.

"If such a brother is to be found, you'll be the first one I'll tell.  But Sapphire...in God's good timing.  Wait for Him and His will," chided Ruth E.

"I know, I know.  But if only someone "out of the Blue family" could be in attendance;  how nice."

"We can pledge to pray together for such a guy Sapphire.  God knows the desire of your heart and I know you actually want what God wants for you.  Why not get Great-granny praying too.  She's good at that.  It's a big part of why Shem and I are together now-due to her prayers and relationship with her Heavenly Father."

"Yes, you are correct Ruth E, cousin."

"I'll need your assistance with Jacey and Jacinth when I'm otherwise occupied, Sapphy.  Take them for a jolly holiday afterwards.  My folks will tend to Mr. and Mrs. Kiamson.  They'll need a slower pace.  I'll be back from the honeymoon in time to say a day of good-byes.  Oh Sapphy my heart is bursting."

"Sure, I can handle it.  Just give me some hints on some of the hurdles of culture shock they'll face.  I know some from you but you were originally from here so have the advantage."

"Ok, let me think of them and write them out for you.  Let you know later.  And Sapphy, thanks for all the help.  Thanks for being such a wonderful cousin-sister down through all the years."

"Oh Ruth E, you're the best-est."

The cousins hugged and shed a few tears on each others' shoulders.

And so on as The Day approached.

Part 26

The Borneo contingent were dazzled and rather overwhelmed with Ruth E's world but true to form, adapted fairly well.  They loved her parents straight off, were somewhat in awe of 'Dr. Shem', as they insisted on calling him, and ever the child-loving people, made quick friends with Hannah and Heather.

There was mutual admiration there.  Hannah and Heather were rather enthralled with "the folks from afar" as they explained to their Grandmother H later.  "Miss Ruth E can talk to them in their language; it sounds so cool.  But they can speak a bit of English with us too, but have a funny accent like Miss Ruth E used to have but they're good people, no mistaking."

Ruth E was so touched by the Borneo love.  All the village women had banded together and made her a traditional bead dress.  Normally such a dress would take about three years to make, little bit by little bit.  The women had kept at it almost night and day for two months straight to complete it.  What a gift!  What an heirloom!  She'd treasure it forever.

This is what a mother would do for a daughter and present to her upon her wedding day.  Ruth E decided she would change out of her wedding dress and into the traditional bead dress for the wedding reception.  What an awesome gift; beaded with love and affection and village family togetherness.  She was still, one of them.

Part 27

The Day arrived.  All was in readiness.  The strains of "Here Comes the Bride" floated up the aisle to meet the Bride and her Roy L Dad coming down.  Shem was having trouble breathing in his tux he was so jubilant. He couldn't keep his eyes off Ruth E even if he tried.  Good that the flower girls came first so he could wave to them.  They'd be after him otherwise.

"Why did brides have to torture their intended to the last minute though," he wondered impatiently?  "Flower girls & Ring bearers.  Bridesmaids.  Maid-of-honor.  Only then, The Bride."

At last the Father gave the Bride away, placing her hand in Shem's.  "You look stunning, Blue Belle", Shem mouthed to her.

The minister cleared his throat to get Shem and Ruth E's attention.  He waited.  He cleared it again, a little louder, a second time.  He might have to shoot a gun into the air with this couple, he mused.  Finally they turned to him as if, "Ah you said something?"

He got on with it before he lost their attention again...and now, I pronounce you "Husband and wife...You may kiss the bride but don't forget where you are."  The minister chortled.

Shem and Ruth E kissed.  Hannah and Heather squealed in delight and everyone else broke out in uproarious laughter.  "Let them laugh with joy," Shem thought, "I've secured my Blue Belle, at last."

And so the marriage of Dr. Shemuel Paul Hutchinson and Miss Ruth Elizabeth Blue began...

Out of the Blue - A Story - Part 22-24

Blue Topaz
Part 22

Achsah Hutchinson, Shem's mother, was a woman of intuition and having realized for some time now her son appeared to be spending more and more time with Ruth Elizabeth Blue, a one time sweetheart, took it upon herself to remonstrate with him.  She'd have to catch him when the girls were not around.  That niche of time would not be easy to come by so she made a date with him for Saturday morning while the girls were at Ruth E's and before Shem went to the senior's home-a window of opportunity she'd grab.  And grab, she did.

"What is it Mama?" Shem asked innocently after they'd ordered their breakfast.

"It's Ruth E, that's what.  Shem, please be careful with her.  She's a wonderful person but you hurt, no rather, broke her heart once upon a time."

"Yes, Mama, I'm keeping that in mind and it keeps me humbled and at a snail's pace with her."

"What about the girls, Shem?  Yes they love her but if this climaxes into a wedding, are they prepared to have a new Momma?  Think especially of Hannah.  She was affected, and long-term, by Josie's Homegoing.  Be careful of them too Shem.  They are your first priority right now."

"I didn't tell you this before, Mama, because I wasn't sure of Ruth E's feelings but I do believe we are making good and steady progress with each other and with her and the girls.  She's really been gracious and giving me a second chance."

"Yes, I still miss Josie and think of her often but I believe she would also want me to move on.  I was wondering, Mama, if you could do me a favor.  If I arrange with Josie's parents to have the girls for a couple of days during school holidays, could you take them there for me?"

"I think it is time for me to collect Josie's things and box them up and send them to the Salvation Army Store.  I want to spend two evenings doing so and remembering her and our relationship.  Then I need to put it behind me.  I'll go bring the girls home afterwards and take her folks some memento or other of Josie's they might like to have.  I think I will then need to tell them of my renewed relationship with Ruth E.  They deserve to know straight from me and not via the grapevine.  What do you think?|"

"Sure.  I can do that and I think you're wise to tell them."  Achsah replied.  "And yes, it is time to pack Josie's things away but you will have to tell the girls you are doing that.  They too may like to keep some of her things, to have and hold now.  You could pack some of the others away in the attic so when they are older they will have a keepsake or two of her. Perhaps some of her special jewelry and China dishes; things like that.   They are very perceptive and observant and would know things are different upon their return."

"Yes, Mama,"  Shem said.  "Thanks for this chat.  It's good to stop and smell the roses; you are a wonderful rose among roses.  I really appreciate all the help over the years you've given so unselfishly and uncomplaining.  You are certainly, "adorned" with God's love.  I also appreciate the advice."

"You are my son, I  could do no less."  Achsah replied, smiling. "A mother's love encompasses much."

Part 23

The days marched on merging into weeks, and months.  Shem would pop down to visit Ruth E on Wednesday evenings for dinner and then slip home late night.  The first time he came, Ruth E was so surprised to see him standing before her at the office reception counter she blushed like a schoolgirl.  Shem was amused but didn't tease.  The office director looked up from his cubical and said to himself, "Oh, Ruth E has a beau; that's news.  He kept it to himself and monitored from a distance.

The girls were so fond of Ruth E and she for them they already felt a lot like family.

Then one Wednesday evening, Shem took Ruth E to a cozy little restaurant about twenty minutes ride out of town.  There Shem proposed to Ruth E and there Ruth E accepted, saying, "Shem I really believe that the Lord brought us together again to renew our relationship and to be united in marriage, so 'Yes! I will marry you!"

Shem slipped a beautiful blue topaz engagement ring onto her finger and explained, "Blue Topaz is a symbol of my love, care and affection for you, Blue Belle.  The blue color, well, I think you also know, being from the Blue family and all."  And he smiled into her eyes.

Shem had apparently already asked Ruth E's father's permission and permission had been granted.  "But what about the girls, Shem?"  Ruth E had asked.  "Are they ok with this?|"

"They sure are, Ruth E.  It was all I could do to keep them at home tonight, they so wanted to come and join "the proposal".  You know all the prince and princess videos they've seen-they feel they are missing out on romance."

"What does your Mother think, Shem?"

"She's all for it, Ruth E.  This Sunday, would you dine with us for lunch please?  She asked."

"Sure, but I must be sure to spend that evening with my folks."

Shem's phone rang and rang.  He finally let go of Ruth E's hand, where he had placed the engagement ring, to answer.

Before he could get "Hello" out, Ruth E heard the distinct voices of the girls in chorus, "What did she say, Daddy?"

Ruth E had to laugh.  Shem chuckled, "Well, sweetpeas, why don't I let you talk to Miss Ruth E yourself and ask her?"

Shem passed the phone to Ruth E but she too couldn't get a word in edgewise, "Miss Ruth E, are you going to marry our Daddy?  He wouldn't let us come and ask!" they said indignantly.

"Yes, girls, I will be very happy to marry your Daddy."

"Yippie!  Yippie! Yippie!" they shouted with glee.

"OK sweethearts I'll hand the phone back to your Dad, Good Night!"

"Good night soon-to-be-Mommy" they said.

Shem took the phone and in his best father's tone told them, "This is all very exciting, I know girls, but you've got school tomorrow, and need to settle down and go to sleep now.  Love you.  Be good for Grandma H and I'll look in on you when I get home."

"Yes, Daddy.  Good-bye."

"Ok, good-bye."  Shem hung up and turned to Ruth E,  "I'm not sure I can settle down and go to sleep tonight though. Let's get you back to your office room and I'd best skedaddle home.  Maybe the drive will help lull me to sleep."

"Well, don't go to sleep before getting there."  Ruth E cautioned.

Parked in the office parking lot, Shem turned to Ruth E, "Some time ago I kissed your hand and you took off out of the car like a bullet out of a gun.  I'd like to see what would happen if I gave you a good-night kiss on your very tempting lips."

"Try it and see," replied staid, Ruth E, "but I warn you..."

She didn't get any further than that because Shem stifled her words.

Ruth E took to giggling and Shem let her catch her breath, "Oh my Shem.  I think I'm going to suffocate."

She opened the car door, stepped out, took some deep calming breaths and said, "Til next time..."  She  hurriedly shut the door, raced up the office steps and let herself into her accommodation.

When her lights winked on Shem sped off grinning into the night.

Part 24

Ruth E called her parents next morning with the engagement news they'd likely already surmised yet she knew they'd want to hear it from her directly.

"Oh we are so happy for you Ruth E," her mother rejoiced.  "Can I go over and tell Great-granny today?  She'll be dying to know."

"Sure if you think she can't wait til I come up on the weekend.  Better she hear from one of us rather than from the gossip section."

"OK, bye.  See ya Friday afternoon."

The branch mission director was an observant sort of  man, after all, his wife had been honing these skills on him for the past forty years or so, so it was not surprising that when he came into the office and saw a beaming Ruth Elizabeth that he knew he'd best glance at her left ring finger as unobtrusively as possible.  Sure enough, he saw the sparkling rock, "Congratulations!"  he greeted Ruth.

"For what?" she asked.

"It so happens I see a very nice gem on your left ring finger that was not there yesterday.  I believe I recall correctly." he said.

"You deduce correctly, Director.  You don't miss a trick.  Thank-you."  Ruth E purred.  "I'm kinda new to this sort of stuff."

"Sort of stuff, is it?" the director laughed his big hardy guffaw, "wait til I tell Madeleine, she'll be in here as fast as you can say, 'applesauce' wanting to know details.  Be forewarned.  Oh, Ruth E; so happy for you."

"Thank-you, Sir Matthew."

True to Matthew's prediction, Madeleine came in all a bustle.  She brought some very fine homemade applesauce too, which amused Ruth E.  No wonder Matthew had made the applesauce comment.  It was one of Madeleine's many specialties and it was indeed delicious.

After Ruth E was plied with applesauce, she was then plied with Madeleine's questions.  Ruth E answered as best she could.  She really was a dear soul and Ruth E didn't mind the 'interrogation'.  She knew it all wouldn't be discussed outside these four walls except likely with Matthew at home.

"Do you know what this calls for tonight, Ruth E?"

"Not really."

"A celebration!  Please come over for dinner and I'll make you a dinner fit for rejoicing."

She was an endearing woman and loved to do such things for others.  Ruth E accepted the invite.

"You come over with Matthew.  He can bring you back afterwards."

"Thank-you Madeleine.  You are so good to me."

"Nonsense.  It needs to be done."  She hustled into Matthew's quiet, commanded him to bring Ruth E home to dinner that evening and then took herself home.

Ruth E went back to her tasks but it took real effort to concentrate.  And speaking of endearing, Shem had sent her messages at her break time and lunchtime.  She sent back not to call til about 9 pm as she was having a celebratory meal with the Director and wife.

He'd complained that he should have been invited too.  "I'm so happy," Ruth E sent back.

"I'm about to burst with happiness," was Shem's rebuttal.  "Was dancing around at the hospital.  The nurses had a job to keep up.  They knew something was up but didn't dare ask.  I want to savor the news to myself for now.  Can't wait to see you though.  BTW, did you catch your breath yet?"  he teased.

Ruth E blushed, "Almost," she warbled.

Out of the Blue - A Story - Part 19-21

Blue Topaz
Part 19

That Tuesday her branch office called her, asking her to come for a meeting to discuss options.  As the office was about an hour's drive away, she took an overnight bag; sent a message to Shem telling him her office paged her and she needed to go.  She hope she would be back in time for their 6 pm dinner.  If not she'd try to let him know as soon as possible.

Off she went for her meeting.

Her options were, she was told, she could go as a substitute, for a month or so to various places which needed relief when one of their many numbers had extended illness, or had emergency recall due to family issues and such like; or, there was a position right there in her stateside office which would be long term; perhaps two years.  The first overseas substitute position was in Papua New Guinea for three months of language teaching to nurses.

For those months abroad she'd have to find her own living expenses from supporters but for the office posting, she'd be paid a salary.  She could have a week to pray and decide.  While there in the office she could use the guest chamber or commute, it was up to her.  If she decided on the office she could also have a two day orientation from the outgoing staff.  There were other terms and conditions regarding both places; the secretary could fill her in later.  For now, please join their prayer day til this evening and stay over in the guest facilities to see what they would be like.

"Hmm," thought Ruth E, " they seem to be pushing the branch office.  Well, she'd have to spend the week in prayer and seek God's guidance.  She'd get Great-granny Blue to pray too.  She was fervent and righteous and had great wisdom and godly counsel.

The next morning after breakfast with the director and his wife, Ruth E headed home.  She took it slow and easy and took in the sights as she drove along.  She'd pop in on Great-granny first and set her prayers into motion.  She stopped off at the farmer's market to see what treat she could find for her.  "Oh, the Danish buns look yummy.  I'll get two and we can go outside for fresh air under the trees and eat, talk and pray in peace."

Before getting out of the car though at the home, she sent a text message to Shem saying she'd be in good time for dinner.  Oh, she'd have to tell Great-granny about that too.  Her and her prayers really got things happening.

Great-granny was very pleased to see Ruth E, and happily allowed her to wheel her outside.  She always loved crisp air and these mid-Sept days were balmy but revitalizing with coolness.  Soon she'd be cooped up for winter.  Ruth E did have to fetch her afghan though, for her legs.  It was almost a touch too cool but she didn't want to miss the day.

Ruth E filled her in on the mission choices and then of her intended dinner for two that evening.  Great-granny was so silently nibbling at her Danish bun, that Ruth E thought she'd said something wrong and offended her.  But then she saw her lips moving in prayer as well as nibbling.  Ruth E was amused.  Great-granny never missed a chance to consult her Heavenly Father.

"Ruth E," her Great-granny finally spoke, "remember that I advised you not to keep Shem dangling?  It's your ultimate decision but just think.  If you go off to the other side of the world again, you may be throwing away some chance that can be just as godly as serving in a foreign land.  There is a nearby posting which may not seem so glamorous but it will keep you much nearer.  I suggest that you hear out what Shem has to say this evening, if anything, and then you and I can pray in our own closets as well as coming together daily for this one week. Don't make a decision one way other other til the deadline arrives."

"Those two little daughters of Shem's adore you and relate to you as if you were their mother.  That picture fits you.  However, do not choose just for their benefit.  You must see if the relationship which is developing between you and Shem could be a lasting, respectful, committed, all things good, etc one.  Can you trust him?  Only you will know the answers to those questions.  You must get your guidance from God and seek His will."

"Thank-you, Great-granny, your wisdom and godly advice, I greatly esteem."  said Ruth E.  "Now I must get you inside before you catch your death of cold.  You still have a 100th birthday party coming round soon and I want to see you there, alive and knittin'  and kickin'.

"Oh, go on, you!" Great-granny grinned.

Six pm rolled around and both Ruth E and Shem were punctual.  For once Navy Blue was not around to tease, so they set out unimpeded.  Ruth E had dressed semi-casually but guessed Shem wouldn't take her anywhere exceedingly formal and she was correct in her surmise.  Italian.  Her western food favorite.

She had a hankering for lasagna, which she ordered.  Shem got some sort of seafood pasta.  They had some garlic bread and a class of wine each.  Ruth E liked red wine with a couple of ice-cubes for good measure.  Shem was a bit more connoisseur with his wine, and didn't need the ice; he'd let his white wine warm up in his glass as he sipped.

He had to hide his amusement.  One thing he liked about Ruth E was her down-to-earth-ness and not minding what others thought about her ways too much.  He was pretty sure having red wine on the rocks was now being hilariously discussed by the wine cellar staff.  He'd have to get re-used to some of her ways.

He'd Googled it some time ago but he recalled once seeing, "Ladylike laws:  The Proper Way to Drink Wine by Lauren Conrad.  He had noted at the time the way to drink red wine:  "room temperature or a touch below..."  Ruth E's was more than several touches below.

He grinned at her.  "You make me very happy, Blue Belle."

"Well, I'm glad I amuse someone," Ruth E beamed back.  She figured he was honing in on her red wine drinking style.  She didn't really care.  She liked it very cold.  "Hoity-toity,"  she said.

As their meal progressed, Shem got quieter and more serious.  "Ruth E", he said, "it seems the relationship between us is kindling nicely.  What do you think?"

"I concur," was her most unromantic reply which she said with a small smile.  She was going to pace herself.

If Shem was a little disappointed in her answer he didn't show it.  He continued, "I'd like it very much if we could see each other, alone, like this, more often."

"Shem, I believe I'd like that too but I need to tell you about my meeting with my mission board today."

Shem's food suddenly got stuck in his throat and his heart felt, like it might sink.  However he was cautioning himself too.  "Don't rush her, you might lose her again."

"What did they have to say?"  he asked after he could finally swallow.

So she told him and asked if he would pray that she'd be guided by God's will and not her own wishes.

He wondered which her wish was:  the near or the far choice but didn't ask.  He said he would certainly do that.  This was going to be one long week.  "So can we meet like this again next Wednesday?"

"Can we make it Friday evening?  I've got to travel to the branch office again.  If I decide on near rather than far I've got to do orientation on Wednesday and Thursday, straight away as the person I would be replacing will be off after that.  The next Monday I'd begin work."  Ruth E explained.

He held his breath but didn't ask and she didn't say, if she chose far, when she'd have to go.

"Ok, I'll be sure to pray about this for you."

"Oh Lord" he said inwardly to God, "let her choose near but, not my will but Yours be done."

Lightening the moment, he changed the subject and told her how happy the girls were on Saturday evenings after they'd come from her full days' company.  He enjoyed all the stories of their days.

"Oh boy," she thought, "I hope they didn't spill everything, especially about her being their new mommy."

She smiled serenely enough, "Yes, I really enjoy them too.  They are really, very pleasant children; well mannered and obedient for the most part."

"They told me your secret."

Ruth E looked up slightly startled, "What secret?" she asked.

"The one about what makes for a good cook," he said.

"Oh, ha, ha."  Ruth E laughed, relieved.  "Yeah, my mother shared that tidbit of wisdom with me when I was a child.  It stuck.  I hope it'll stick with them too."

He would withhold what else they'd said about her being a good mother.  He'd keep that as a treasure and trump card for now.  He was relieved his girls had innocently given him "permission" to seek out Ruth E.  He agreed with his girls, Ruth E would indeed make a for a good mother."  He'd add, "and a good wife and companion."

He'd bide his time yet but he'd near burst his buttons this week waiting for Ruth E's work verdict.  He was sure of it.  "Oh, Father God, help," he pleaded, sending up a silent SOS to the One in control.

"Saturday, I want to take the girls for Chinese food in the evening.  Would you care to join us?"  Shem asked and hoped he didn't sound like he was begging.

"That sounds like fun," Ruth E said, "but I already promised Sapphire I'd do something with her.  I'll take a rain check though."

Shem had to be satisfied with that; he sighed quietly.

"I've really enjoyed our evening, Blue Belle.  I hope we can do this often but understand your priority is your work for your Lord and Master, Jesus Christ.  Yet He is not a hard taskmaster." Shem said and then shut up before he put his foot in his mouth and regretted it.

He paid the bill and they left the restaurant.  He drove her home, took her hand and pressed it to his lips.  "Blue Belle" he whispered.

"Good-night, Shem, thanks so much for a good dinner," Ruth E escaped then from the car before her face betrayed her very benevolent emotions.  "Good night."  She raced into the house, closed the door and stood with her back to it almost hyperventilating.  "Get a grip" she scolded herself, "you're 30 not 13!"

Leave it to Navy to bring her back to earth with a thud.  He seemed to always be lurking and smirking at her lately.  "Nice night out, Ruth E?" he inquired and then sauntered away to forage for snacks in the kitchen, snickering to himself.

It was high time Navy's leave was up so he could try to stay out of mischief, afloat on a boat.

Part 20

The week wore on, Ruth E prayed at home and with Great-granny Blue.  She was feeling she should take the admin office position, keeping her great-grandmother's wise advice in mind regarding not stringing Shem along to a dead end.

She was thinking that if anything was to come of this relationship, it would also be good to let Hannah and Heather continue to get used to her.

Another factor was financial support.  She'd stopped much of it upon her unexpected return and didn't want to keep making on and off bids for support.  Having a steady salary would be better and as the relationship with Shem was still uncertain it seemed the better choice.  She'd likely stay at the office guest chamber throughout the week, especially during winter months and then travel home for weekends.  This decision gave Ruth E peace of mind and heart.  Great-granny Blue felt it was the right choice and told Ruth E so.

On the last day of her allotted time, Ruth E motored off to the office to give them her decision.  She was immediately set to work, then, being orientated to her new duties.  At mid-afternoon break time, she sent a short message to Shem telling him of her decision.  He replied almost instantly, "Thank God!  Can't wait to see you on Saturday."

"I'll be home about 6 pm on Fri if all goes well.  I know originally we planned for dinner but think I better eat with my folks.  Maybe  afterwards we could go for ice-cream say, about 7 pm.  What do you think?"

"I'd love that Blue Belle," Shem typed.  He added many grinning, happy faces and a heart.

"Well, that put him out of his misery," thought Ruth E impishly.  She too, had a grin on her face, feeling confirmation of a correct decision.

It was a bit difficult to collect her concentration after that but she strove valiantly and managed to get a feel for the work enough to satisfy Jane, her mentor.

It was good there was a convenience store nearby.  After work hours Ruth E went to find some edibles to cook in the guest accommodation kitchen.  It was going to be quiet in the evenings, Ruth E thought.  After a simple dinner, Ruth E arranged her room and settled in with a good book she'd spied earlier in the office library.  Just as she was getting comfortable, her phone rang and a familiar voice asked, "Miss Ruth E, when does water stop running downhill?"

"Oh, Heather, is that you?  I bet its when they turn the tap off."

"No! The answer is, "When it gets to the bottom, of course!"

"Ha, ha, ha; good one Heather."

It was Hannah's turn next, "Daddy wants to talk to you but please don't be long, he needs to read us a bedtime story."

"Oh, ok, Hannah.  How was school today?"

"Ok, but they were making cards for Mother's Day so I felt sad."

"That is very difficult, Hannah.  We can talk about that on Saturday, if you like.  Ok?  I want to give you a hug."

"It's ok, Miss Ruth E, I made the card for you instead!  Here's Daddy."

Ruth E was speechless and caused Shem to ask a couple of times, "Ruth E, are you ok?"

"Oh. Oh.  Yes, Yes. So what do you think of the decision?"

"I have many questions as to why this choice Ruth E but I'd rather hear the answer in person.  I'll just say, for now, I'm very, very glad and that's an understatement."  And Ruth E could hear the joy and relief in his voice.  "Ok, Hannah and Heather await.  Good night Blue Belle."

"Good night, Shem," she murmured softly.

Part 21

Friday was happy day.  Ruth E drove home after being termed, "She'll do," by Jane.  She told her parents of her new responsibilities and of her plans to live at the guest accommodation throughout the week and home on weekends.  "Of course, if there is a special family event during the week, let me know; I'll come, weather permitting."

Her parents were grateful to the Lord for bringing Ruth E back home.  Of course, they told her, "We would never stand in your way if you went back to the foreign field if you truly felt that's where the Lord was leading you.  We're sure glad, though, that we'll see more of you more often."

"Yes, I miss all those dear ones left in Borneo so much but I'm glad to see you, more often too.  The hardest thing about leaving here and going overseas was leaving you two behind."

"Well, Mom, I'll quickly wash up the dishes.  Thanks for another great meal.  One of these days I'll have to cook Borneo fare."

Dishes done, Ruth E  had just enough time to spruce herself up and bob downstairs, when Shem arrived on the doorstep, promptly at 7 pm.

Off they went for ice-cream.

"The girls wanted to come too but I told them it was my turn to see you as they'd have their chance all day tomorrow," Shem laughed.

"Yes, it's good to take turns."  She grinned  She was feeling more at ease in Shem's presence now as she let herself trust him more.

They ensconced themselves in the Ice Cream parlor and were delightedly digging into their ice-cream sundaes.

"So," said Shem, "I'd dearly love to hear how you came to your decision to stay nearby."

"Well Shem," Ruth E answered, "I asked Great-granny Blue to pray with me for that week, to seek God's guidance clearly.  There were a couple of factors that stood out.  A big one was that I'd asked my supporters to stop supporting since I wasn't doing any 'work' for which they'd pledged to support.  One or two were determined to continue--God bless their souls--until a final decision was arrived at.

If I went overseas again I'd have to ask them all to start up and thought it would be confusing to start and stop etc each time a substituting stint came or went.  The nearby admin work is steady and complete with salary so I don't need to canvas for financial support."  She said all that but withheld the second big factor which was him and the girls.  She stopped talking, took a drink of water and savored another mouthful of ice-cream.  She waited to see if Shem noticed.

He was savoring a mouthful too but she could see the wheels turning in his head and a small patient frown appeared on his face.  He appeared to be waiting for further news but when it was not forth coming, she could see he was mulling over in his mind as to what to say next.

"I see.  You mentioned a couple of factors.  That's only one."  he said.  "What about the others?"  he caught her eyes with his trying to read an answer.

"I'm not quite at liberty to say Shem; I hope I can in time." she said quietly.  He was observant she acknowledge.

"Oh, would it have anything to do with us, Blue Belle?"  Shem tried to catch her eyes again but they were elusive.

"Yes, Shem."  she said and this time their eyes met meaningfully.

"That didn't take much time to divulge," he said merrily.

"Ruth E, about a year of those original two years you said you'd be overseas, has elapsed.  We've been writing.  We've been seeing snatches of each other.  The girls have been visiting you and adoring you, I might add.  Our relationship seems to be firming up.  Do you foresee us moving forward together anymore than we are?  I don't want to string you along Ruth E nor do I want my girls to be wrenched away."  She told her.

"Shem, I'll tell you what Great-granny advised me.  She said those two years were kind of long and that I had better not be dangling a carrot in front of you without you being able to eat it, kind of thing and that I had best not be stringing you along out of some sort of revenge."

"Wise lady, " Shem commented smiling.

"However," Ruth E went on...

"Always a 'however'" Shem thought to himself.

"...the Holy Spirit seemed to be telling me to test your commitment Shem.  You know our past history and what transpired.  I felt that commitment and trust needed to be ascertained."

"And do you know what, Shem?"  Ruth E asked him.

"No, what?"  suspense was killing him.

"I have deduced that you are committed to our relationship.  You've been very patient and understanding.  I see that you are sincere in your faith and service to God and a wonderful father to your girls.  I also trust you now."

"So the second factor is, and Great-granny agrees, that this nearby post would be good for exploring how our relationship will be culminated."

"This post is for two years and nearby and will allow more face-to-face time.  Is this a good answer, Shem?"

As she spoke, Shem's eyes glittered with more and more joy.  "It is a most excellent answer, Blue Belle.  You've brought great joy to my heart.  You've been most kind and generous with your answer."

"I will truly seek to be loyal and steadfast with you.  Thank-you for this most marvelous second chance, Ruth E."  And Shem actually shed a tear or two, which Ruth E reached up and brushed away with her thumb.

"You're most marvelously welcome, Shem".  " And I shall do my best to do the same.  Let's play it by ear and see where we go."

"I concur," he replied mischievously.

"Well, our ice-cream Sundaes are becoming a lake, let's finish up and take a stroll in the evening air." Shem suggested.

"Saturday is the night when I take the girls out for dinner and you have a rain check to use.  Won't you join us, tomorrow, Ruth E?"

"Yes, I'm free and that sounds wondrous."
